All of these local breeds are known for their endurance, their ability to survive on poor food and in severe weather conditions and they all share the characteristics of having extremely tough hooves.
They first appear in history in 1697 when the Akizuki family of the Takanabe Clan took animals then grazing wild under its protection and created a stud farm.
The system was based on giving the breeding stock full freedom and rounding them up once a year presumably to select horses for training and to check on health as well as perhaps castrate males thought unfit for breeding.

To answer the earlier questions, Harada Satoru *did* compete this year but lost to Matsumura in the round before the quarterfinals (Matsumura then lost to Takanabe).

Many other activities were enjoyed by the team which also included a trip to Ocean Dome and a tour around the island of Kyushu, stopping at many major attractions.
The 26th of August saw us treated to an amazing celebration presented by the community of Takanabe.
The 30th of August saw us leaving Miyazaki by plane to Tokyo to visit Tokyo Disney Land and the fantastic shopping at Shinjuku.

this train approaches a very wet Miyazaki station on May 9.....
this train was the 1009 service from Oita to Miyazaki train no.5005M,aka "NICHIRIN".....
this scene was on the 1009 train near Nobeoka.......the track section foreman i guess..he got on at Usuki and travelled with the driver to Takanabe taking notes on tunnells and any lineside equipment.....checking for any problems.....
