Situated roughly in the middle of Honshu on the Sea of Japan side, Toyama is embraced by mighty nature, with the Tateyama mountain range on the east and the Japan Sea on the north.
Himi is located in the northwestern part of Toyama and faces Toyama Bay to the east with the north and west sides bordering on Ishikawa, having Mt. Isurugi and other mountains in between.
The 27 bronze statues on the streets are Takaoka Doki Copperware of Takaoka, which has been one of the most famous local crafts of Toyama since the 17th century.

The only thing TAKAOKA is famous for is its Daibutsu, a large statue of Buddha, cast in 1933, about ten minutes' walk north of the station, and only worth seeing if you have time to kill while waiting for a train.
The Toyama Youth Hostel (tel 0764/37-9010; under ¥3000) is several kilometres north of the city, beside a pine-fringed beach which would be lovely if not for all the rubbish on the shore.
