Takayama Ukon was born the son of Takayama Tomoteru (also known as Zusho; 1531-1596), a retainer of Matsunaga Hisahide who held Sawa Castle in NW Yamato province.
Takayama went on to serve in Hideyoshi’s invasion of Shikoku (1584) and in 1585 was transferred to Akashi (Harima province, 60,000 koku).
Takayama Ukon was a rather controversial figure, considered by the Jesuits as a pillar of the Christian faith in Japan and by some Japanese (contemporary and modern) as a symbol of the duplicity and heavy-handedness of Christianity in the Sengoku era.

The deal was that Takayama would switch to Nobunaga's side, in return for which Nobunaga allow the Jesuits to build a seminary in Gifu.

It's often said that this "willingness to betray one's father on account of Christianity" is what caused Hideyoshi to fear that the new religion would undermine Japanese loyalties.

Originally based in the Portuguese Jesuit Convent in Osaka, he weathered the early clashes between Japanese and Portuguese Jesuits, acting as teacher in the Osaka Catholic School and entertaining a close friendship with number of Hideyoshi cohorts - most notably Manase Dousan, Hideyoshi's personal doctor, and generals Konishi Yukinaga and Kuroda Yoshitaka.
He was also on friendly terms with Takayama Nagafusa, also known as Ukon or don Justo to his Christian allies.
His proven knowledge of the land and the people caused him to be headhunted by the Jeromites (at the time organized as Minorite Order of the Hermits of St. Jerome of the Fiesole Congregation); it is also likely that some element close to St. Jerome (possibly Takayama Ukon?) spoke for him at a critical moment.
