Southern Hyogo Prefecture was severely devastated by the magnitude 7.2 Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, which destroyed major parts of Kobe and Awaji, as well as Takarazuka and neighboring Osaka prefecture, killing nearly 5500 people.
Hyogo has coastlines on two seas: to the north, the Sea of Japan, to the south, the Inland Sea.
Hyogo borders on Osaka Prefecture, Kyoto Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture and Okayama Prefecture.

Takeno Snorkeling Center (located at the coast of Nihon Sea in Takeno Town, Hyogo Prefecture, in the San-in Kaigan National Park) was established in July 1992 by Environmental Agency of Japan (of the time).
These activities are mostly aimed for children of elementary school ages and run by volunteer staff of the center.

Having grown up in southern California weather, this is precisely how I survive the hot and humid summers and the cold winters of Japan.
Coastal areas of Hyogo and Kyoto are nice places to start off with in the Kansai area.
My husband and I usually visit a place called Takeno near Kasumi in Hyogo, which is famous for Matsuba crab and all kinds of other seafood.
