Takeoff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Takeoff is the phase of flight where an aircraft transitions from moving along the ground (taxiing) to flying in the air (see flight), usually on a runway.
These are deployed from the front and rear edges of the wing prior to takeoff, and retracted during the climb out.
The speeds needed for takeoff are relative to the motion of the air (indicated airspeed).

The R/C Aircraft Proving Grounds - Takeoff Animation
After the takeoff roll has started, the nose wheel lifts off the ground (tail wheel for a conventional gear airplane), and the aircraft assumes a climb attitude while still rolling on its main wheels.
The takeoff is completed when the model is approximately 2 meters (6 1/2 feet) from the ground.
The takeoff should not be downgraded for wing dips caused by turbulence, unless the wings are not immediately leveled.

Embry-Riddle - Jet Transport Takeoff   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Takeoff may appear to be an uncontrolled release of raw power, but it is actually a meticulously calculated, controlled, and evaluated event.
Thus, takeoff distance is equal to the square of the velocity divided by twice the acceleration.
Because the takeoff distance is proportional to the square of the takeoff velocity, the takeoff distance would increase by a factor of four if the takeoff speed were doubled.

A Low Cost Method for Generating Takeoff Ground Roll Charts from Flight Test Data
Therefore, the liftoff indicated airspeed for all takeoffs was assumed to be 53 mph.
The mean takeoff ground roll shown in Figure 15 is shown in a format similar to that used by several general aviation manufacturers.
After standardizing all of the takeoff data, ideally every takeoff would standardize to the same distance as all of the other takeoffs, which would be the takeoff distance at sea level, at standard weight, with no wind on a level runway.

The Takeoff in the Long Jump & Other Running Jumps
Although Grosvenor's study was not concerned with muscle action, her digitised coordinate data were subsequently used to compute muscle-tendon length changes during the takeoff for the same six muscles (and using the same computational procedures) as used in our long jump study.
Alternatively, it maybe that, as in the case of the running long jump, the vertical forces exerted as the muscles shortened were too small and/or were exerted too late in the takeoff to have a significant effect on the outcome (that is, on the vertical velocity of the athlete at the instant of takeoff).
It was only the happy finding of a subject who had six trials in which her takeoff foot was squarely on the top plate of the force platform that permitted the conduct of a longitudinal analysis of her jumps.

Takeoff [Ch. 13 of See How It Flies]
Suppose you are attempting an ordinary takeoff from an ordinary field, but due to a gust (or perhaps even a lapse in pilot technique) you become airborne at a too-low airspeed.
Use a takeoff checklist that is appropriate to the particular aircraft you are flying (not a generic substitute).
The rationale is that during the takeoff roll you don’t have time to make an intelligent decision about what is minor and what is not, so (assuming there is plenty of runway remaining) the safest thing is to stop now and think later.

Aero 11 - Rejected Takeoff Studies
Each takeoff includes the possibility of an RTO and a subsequent series of problems resulting from the actions taken during the reject.
For example, an unreported RTO may occur when a takeoff is stopped very early in the takeoff roll because the flight crew hears a takeoff warning horn, stops to reset trim, then taxis back to the runway and continues takeoff.
A takeoff may be rejected for a variety of reasons, including engine failure, activation of the takeoff warning horn, direction from air traffic control (ATC), blown tires, or system warnings.

Takeoff at Logan aborted by errors - The Boston Globe
An American Airlines jet aborted its takeoff at Logan International Airport Tuesday, after errors by a pilot and a controller allowed another plane to cross onto its runway, federal officials said yesterday.
FAA officials attributed the close call to errors by two air traffic controllers who were handling takeoffs.

Aerospaceweb.org | Ask Us - Airliner Takeoff Speeds
The takeoff speed of such aircraft varies quite a bit, depending on the takeoff weight and the use of high-lift devices like flaps (2) and slats.
In this case, we know that we need enough lift (L) to counteract the takeoff weight (W), we know the reference area, and we know the density at the takeoff altitude.
Should an engine fail during the takeoff run, there is usually a yawing moment since the engine(s) on one side of the plane produce more thrust than those on the other side.

Takeoff & Landing Field Lengths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The Takeoff Field Length (TOFL) and Landing Field Length (LFL) are calculated from first principles, based on FAR-25 definitions and using the appropriate aerodynamics and engine characteristics.
Takeoff ground run is evaluated using stepwise integration and followed by a circular arc transition and a constant-angle airborne segment to match the 'second segment' climb gradient at the takeoff screen height.
It is possible to generate plots and tabulations of the takeoff and landing field lengths as functions of range or takeoff weight.

USATODAY.com - Fuel loss at takeoff may jeopardize record attempt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Fuel leaks had delayed his takeoff and also plagued Fossett's successful flight last year when he became the first person to fly solo, non-stop around the world without refueling.
His team was also scrambling Thursday to get clearance for a different route because of soaring temperatures in the cockpit and concerns about weak winds over the Atlantic during the last leg of the trip, said Jon Karkow, flight engineer.
"Takeoff was a bit scary, to say the least," Fossett, 61, said in a statement.

 Takeoff Adequate
We have a rule of thumb that can determine if the runway length is adequate for the takeoff; although, it will not guarantee rate of climb after the takeoff.
Using the rule, "10 times the square root of the percentage of liftoff distance," we use 50 percent for the liftoff distance and the square root of 50 is 7.07.
Ten times 7.07 equates to 70.7 percent of the liftoff speed should be obtained at the halfway point to guarantee takeoff in the remaining half of the runway.

 Helicopter Aviation
The takeoff can be initiated by lowering the nose slightly (a couple degrees).
Assuming that the wind is strong enough that the helicopter is in effective translational lift at a hover, the initial part of the takeoff will be slightly different.
It is important that the pilot be in the habit of preventing any yaw in case the helicopter touches down during the takeoff roll.

 Takeoff Ad Absurdum
Everything else was a [blur.]" In the April 3, 1998 NTSB interview, the pilot stated that during the takeoff attempt, everything was "going fine" until he pulled back on the wheel at rotation speed, and that the next thing he could recall was sitting in the grass.
The pilot reported a takeoff gross weight of 5,703 kilograms (12,573 pounds) including a fuel load at takeoff of 320 U.S. gallons, or 2,144 pounds.
The 0856 Portland hourly observation gave conditions pertinent to computation of takeoff performance as: winds from 300 degrees magnetic at 7 knots; temperature 11 degrees C (52 degrees F); and altimeter setting 30.07 inches Hg.

PLANNING OF THE SHORT FIELD TAKEOFF
This could possibly be the difference between making a safe takeoff and one that winds up in the trees at the end of the runway.
An excellent illustration of this point would be using weather information that was initially obtained during the weather brief, in particular the temperature and winds, calculating the takeoff, and departing a couple of hours later, especially in the summer when the late morning is approaching the high noon.
A little nose up trim set prior to the takeoff roll might help achieve a smoother transition from rotation to Vx, vis-a-vis the sine wave looking ascent and climb as the airspeed is being chased.
