FIPRESCI - Festival Reports - Toronto 05 - Who is Takeshi
Instead of playing two characters, Takeshi develops a double variation of the image he wants or thinks he projects in the public eye – Takeshi Kitano, the merciless yakuza we've seen in countless films, and 'Beat' Takeshi, the insane deadpan TV icon.
Takeshis' is one of those rare films that doesn’t trap itself as a whole under any categorization or appreciative analysis; it's rather designed as a mish-mash of inspired flashes and cheap thrills than a logical or focused mind trip, and a hard one to love from start to finish.
Even if Takeshis' proves to be his most personal effort so far, Takeshi remains a mysterious fellow who obviously adores nourishing this ambiguous and intriguing aura we have cherished over the years, even the bad ones.

 takeshi kitano: takeshis' review
Takeshis', which debuted at this year's Venice International Film Festival and subsequently screened at the celluloid festas in Vancouver, Toronto and London, has thus far traversed a bumpy course, with critical maulings riding shotgun up there alongside the more expected superlatives.
The narrative structure is as peppered as a spray of bullets from an Uzi.
Kotomi Kyono, while a tad dull as the movie star Takeshi's girlfriend, bears more than just costume jewellery sparkle in her ulterior role as a glitzy, ditsy yakuza girlfriend who happens to be the deadbeat Takeshi's tormenting neighbor.

Takeshis' (2005)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Having seen a lot of Kitano Takeshi's work, one has to realize that this guy is totally hit and miss.
And then we have Takeshis, which I'm proud to say is probably the worst movie I've seen in a number of years.
But the film is presented in such a jumbled mess and scenes and characters that don't make any sense until the last scenes of the film, and it's a total cheat.

Media Hussy: 'Takeshis' - Not Very Good
(VENICE, Sept. 3rd) A surprise press screening of director Takeshi Kitano's latest film, "TAKESHIS'", was held at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival before the film had its public screening on the evening of September 2nd (early morning of the 3rd in Japan) at the festival's main venue, the Sala Grande.
The film stars Beat Takeshi as himself and as a convenience store worker, but the complicated story's mixture of reality and fantasy failed to garner a good reaction.
As the end credits rolled, applause was sparse, upon which director Takeshi Kitano, sitting amongst the audience, was heard to mutter "Maybe it's a little too heavy."

 Takeshis’ . (Kitano Takeshi, Japan)
The Brother -issue Kitano appears quite frequently in Takeshis’— when the look-alike returns home after meeting his idol, he lapses into an extended fever dream in which he imagines (shades of Charlie Kaufman) what it would be like to be Kitano Takeshi.
Turns out it’s a lot like starring in one of his yakuza movies, meaning that your dialogue is terse, your motivations are cloudy, bad guys in suits are forever shooting at you, and a pair obese clowns are trailing you to the seaside for some wholesome capering.
Takeshis’ is gleeful and relentless in inventorying the clichés of Kitano’s filmography.

DVD Verdict: Judge Adam Arseneau's Blog
To say I am a fan of 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano would be something of an understatement.
Takeshi (the character in the film) is a famous actor who gets carted from movie shoot to movie shoot in a Rolls Royce.
Irritatingly repetitious, absurdly bizarre and totally random, Takeshis' is one part middle finger to Kitano's own celebrity, one part Fellini-esque self-indulgence and personal reflection on a cinematic career, and ten parts satire and mockery of every single film he has ever made.

LONDON FILM FESTIVAL: Takeshis\' - Shiny Shelf
On a related note, Takeshi seems to be aware of, an playing to, his non-Japanese language audience these days, picking instantly recognisable symbols (a caterpillar stands for potential, the stars represent yearning) to communicate his meaning to an audience who will be reading the subtitles as well as watching the pictures move.
It’s a measure of Takeshi’s acting prowess that even when one iteration of his screen persona is dreaming of being the other that the audience is never in any doubt over which of the Takeshis they are watching.
Essentially, Takeshi pulls out every trick he’s ever learned in a career of making movies that always entertain first and foremost, but while his stylistic verve and eye for engaging onscreen motion serve him well here, they only just manage to make up for the picture being just a touch too long.

Well, if they hadn't seen that film, and they decided to see Takeshis', they would COMPLETELY be in the dark.
The film relies on a viewers knowledge of who Takeshi is, and that he has appeared in a number of Yakuza styled films.
Takeshi shows that he can shoot some beautiful scenes, but as always, he's not the easiest of storytellers to follow.

An extremely sophisticated venture into the house of mirrors that is life in show-biz, the film plays with both the cinematic archetypes impressed upon Kitano's unconscious - Fellini's The Clowns, for example - and the doppelganger his enormous popularity seems to have generated.
Five-hundred percent Kitano, Takeshis' follows the busy lives of Beat, the performer, and Kitano, a shy cashier at a convenience store.
Kitano - playing his twin roles with flawless ease and consummate skill - enters the sublime domain of cinema-within-cinema with the playfulness of a puer eternus - the eternal child abiding in all of us.

Kitano 'Beat' Takeshi, world-famous star of film and television, meets his bleached double, whose name is also Kitano.
In Takeshis', Kitano takes a solipsistic satirical look at his own oeuvre and would appear - while looking for the exit - not to be able to escape from his bunched-up explosions of violence, tender fantasies of death, amusing choreographies and other idiosyncrasies.
Whatever the case may be, the result invites revision: a surrealist, hilarious, occasionally challenging and innovative film that is sometimes irritating and tiresome - as can so often be said of the subversive exercises of idiosyncratic directors.

The title of Takeshi Kitano's splendid new film is indeed in the plural, and does indeed denote possession without indicating what is possessed.
The working title was Fractal, which suggests the kind of ideas in play: this is a splintered narrative, densely populated with doppelgängers and tripelgängers, which explores alternative realities and possibilities.
Insofar as it has a centre, it centres on two Takeshi Kitanos, one a successful TV star, the other a bum who accidentally discovers his resemblance to the star and trades on it by trying for a career on the fringes of showbiz.

The fl haired Takeshi is pretty straight forward in the film, a revered icon in TV and film as he is in real-life.
The film mostly focuses on blonde Takeshi as a sort of parallel universe with himself with his real life companions (on and off screen) in alternate careers as well.
Now, what the film is really trying to say as the two Takeshi’s universes crisscross one another, I’m not sure, nor is the TIFF guide and judging by the lukewarm applause at the conclusion of the screening, nor is anyone else either.

Great news for Takeshi Kitano (aka ‘Beat’ Takeshi) fans – the Japanese filmmaker’s latest title Takeshis’ is due for an April 7th release and it will include English subtitles.
Somehow, the lives of the two men collide in mystifying and entertaining fashion, as Takeshi Kitano (the director) constantly references his own work (including Sonatine, Zatoichi, and Brother, to name some) in the name of wild, unadulterated parody.
But there's another Takeshi Kitano out there: a mild-mannered convenience store clerk and struggling actor (also played by Kitano) who dreams of being like the "other" Kitano.
