Topic: Takhallus

Urdu poetry - TvWiki, the free encyclopedia
The traditional convention in identifying Urdu poets is to mention the takhallus at the end of the name.
Thus, Ghalib, whose given name was Mirza Asadullah Beg (the prefix Mirza and suffix Beg identifying him as a Chughtai) and official name and title was Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan is referred to formally as Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, or, in common parlance, as just Mirza Ghalib.
This is because in the ghazal form, the poet would usually incorporate his or her pen name into the final couplet (maqta) of each poem as a type of 'signature'.

But what we ask of a poet is the texture of his/her writing, its thought and sensibility, and Ghalib did not let us down.
We roll back the years till we see Ghalib as the child of a feudal aristocracy, embodiment of a class, rather than of a class, rather than of a nation, for nationhood had not yet been born in India.
Ghalib, literally meaning "dominant", was the poet's takhallus, or nom de plume, and was not part of his given name.

The takhallus, or pen-name, is identified most often by typographical devices such as parentheses or quotation marks.
In determining entry element and additional elements for the heading, the takhallus is ignored.
References should be made with the takhallus as the entry element, and all other elements, including the name(s) chosen as surnames for the heading.

 Glossary
Traditionally, the poet puts their name or pen name (takhallus) in the last couplet of a ghazal.
Some poets use the maqta as a vehicle to talk to themselves or reflect on the poem (ghazal) as a whole.
By tradition, the takhallus appears in the final couplet (sher) of the ghazal.

 ASAD: A Sher A Day
The Urdu term of a poet's pseudonym is 'taKhallus' (तख़ल्लुस).
Couplets with a poet's taKhallus in them are usually the last in a Ghazal.
A poet can use his taKhallus very cleverly to address himself, but it sounds still better when the thought is as clever as its presentation.

A common concept is the pursuit of the poet of the caravan of his love; by the time he reaches their campsite they have already moved on.
The nasib is usually follwed by the takhallus - a release or disengagement.
The poet often achieved this disengagement by describing his transition from the nostalgia of the nasib to the next portion of the poem.

Muhammed Shamsuddin, better known by his takhallus or "nom de plume" of Hanz, was one of the most celebrated writers of Persian lyrical poetry.
He was born at Shiraz, the capital of Fars, in the early part of the 8th century of the Mahometan era, that is to say, in the 14th of our own.
The above article was written by Edward Henry Palmer, M.A., late Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge; Lord Almoner's Professor of Arabic at Cambridge, 1871-81; murdered in Egypt, 1882, while serving on Government secret service; author of Arabic Grammar and Persian Dictionary.

Early in his life Jami was given to a strong interest in mysticism.

I agree with Takhallus that the theory of Musharraf washing his hands seems a bit strained.
If it is politically too difficult for him to openly endorse US troops invading the region, I'm not sure how it would help him to pretend he's not endorsing it but then (ostensibly) not respond when they do.
I don't know...maybe it was crafted as a solution to a problem that has no solution, sort of the least of all evils...but it still seems doubtful that it would work even if it is true.

In his poems Nasir uses the takhallus, or pen name, Hujjat or Hujjat-i Khurasan, and this has been universally accepted as the proof of his occupying such rank in the hierarchy.
On may find in every work on his biography that in Egypt he was appointed as hujjat of Khorasan.
So far as I could make out after years of inquires and asking specialist in Ismaili religious literature, Nasir-i Khusraw's name is never mentioned in Fatimid literature and his works simply do not exist in it, though probably this is because they are in Persian.

His original Takhallus (pen-name) was Asad but then he came across this 'sher' (couplet) which used the same takhallus:
He apparently said, "Whoever authored this sher should get lots of rahmat ("mercy") of God but if it is mine then lots of laanat ("shame") on me!", and he changed his takhallus to 'Ghalib', which literally means a conqueror.
Indian Cinema has paid a tribute to the legendary poet through a film (in sepia/fl and white) named Mirza Ghalib (made in 1954) in which Bharat Bhushan plays Ghalib and Suraiya plays his courtesan lover, Chaudvin.

Pen name - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Note: List of Urdu language poets provides pen names for a range of Urdu poets.
A shâ'er (a poet who writes she'rs in Urdu or Persian) almost always has a takhallus, a pen name, traditionally placed at the end of the name when referring to the poet by his full name.
For example Hafez is a pen-name for Shams al-Din, and thus the usual way to refer to him would be Shams al-Din Hafez or just Hafez.
