Takoma Park was founded by 'Benjamin Franklin Gilbert in 1883 and incorporated in 1890.
The Takoma Park community (as distinct from the actual incorporated area) spills over the D.C. Maryland line into the Takoma neighborhood of the District, but the part inside the District is politically separate from the City of Takoma Park and not given an official identity within the District of Columbia.
Takoma Park is an ethnically diverse city, with a large proportion of the population being recent immigrants.

Takoma Park was the first commuter suburb in the area and was originally located on approximately 100 acres of land around the B & O Railroad tracks.
Takoma Park was advertised as being located high above the swampy, malaria-ridden Washington City, and possessing such amenities as fresh spring water and beautiful cottages and villas surrounded by spacious, landscaped lawns.

The Takoma Park Presbyterian Church is nearly as old as the community, starting in 1890 as part of a Union Chapel (site of current TPPC Education Building) along with Methodist and Episcopal congregations who moved on to new sites before the turn of the century.
Takoma Park was one of the fist “nuclear-free” zones in the United States; there is an active recycling program; and there are three community festivals each year: a folk festival, a Fourth of July parade, and a street festival.
The church is located 3 blocks from the Takoma Metro (subway) stop, 3 blocks from downtown Takoma Park, and one long block from the Takoma Park Municipal Building, library, and two of the elementary schools.

Takoma Hall was located at 317 Cedar Street, close to the present Metro station, at an angle to the railroad tracks.
Membership growth in the mid 80’s was the result of an expansion program at the Washington Adventist Hospital resulting in Sanitarium (San) Church members, hospital employees and patients to disperse to other churches in the area including the Takoma Park Church.

 Historic Takoma -- House & Garden Tour
That year the tour went through the Victorian and pre-World War II homes in historic North Takoma in Takoma Park MD. In 2001, the tour featured twelve homes in historic Takoma DC, including the new Takoma Village Co-housing and the Takoma DC Library.
The Historic Takoma House and Garden Tour is held annually on the first Sunday in May. The tour is self-guided and generally features 10-18 outstanding homes and gardens from selected neighborhoods within Takoma Park, MD and Takoma, DC.
Proceeds from the tour are a major source of income for Historic Takoma and are used to fund the organization's many community programs and activities.
