Record collectors are typically thought of as irascible loners, but in the Washington of the ’50s and early ’60s, there existed a group of scruffy young blues and folk fans who could’ve given the Illuminati a run for their all-seeing eyes.
Though Fahey’s self-released first album was ostensibly on Takoma Records, the label didn’t properly exist until this year, when Fahey and Denson formed a partnership with record distributor Norman Pierce to re-release some of Fahey’s old material.
Thirsty Ear Recordings arranges for Fahey to record with Cul de Sac, which the guitarist refers to as a “retro lounge act.” The acrimonious proceedings were chronicled extensively by Jones and ultimately became the liner notes for the resulting album, The Epiphany of Glenn Jones.

These 1958 recordings, pressed up as 78s and catalogued as "authentic Negro folk music", were an elaborate joke at the expense of folk purists, but also demonstrated Fahey's mastery of the blues idiom.
Fahey's early recordings appeared on his own Takoma Records imprint, with his second and third albums also being re-recorded for reissue in 1967.
The ambitious America, which was restored to its intended double album length when reissued in the late 90s, didn't sell as well as its predecessors and Takoma suffered in the general recession which hit the music industry in the 70s.

The Takoma releases of the early sixties were obsure to the general public, but enormously influential to a legion of guitar pickers.
Fahey operated from the point of view of a dedicated folklorist, dedication that went beyond his own playing and led to the rediscovery of artists like Skip James and songs that were rescued from stacks of ancient 78s.
As a singular talent and a significant influence, John Fahey deserves a wider audience, and thanks to Fantasy Records, the current curators of the Takoma catalog, this music is available in pristine and expanded form for everyone.
