In November 2000, along with Koichi Kato, Yamasaki was heavily involved in the failed intraparty coup against Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori.
Yamasaki, Shinzo Abe, and Foreign Minister Taro Aso, are considered candidates to replace Koizumi after the prime minister's term expires.

Taku Yamasaki, a senior lawmaker of the ruling Liberal-Democratic Party, left Jan. 9 for North Korea, becoming the first Japanese politician of his stature to travel to the country since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took office in September.
According to sources familiar with the trip, arrangements were under way for the former LDP vice president to meet with North Korean officials, including Song Il Ho, ambassador in charge of diplomatic normalization talks with Japan.
The trip raises the question of whether there will be a breakthrough that could prompt a resumption of bilateral talks stalled since February 2006.
