 AMZ - June, 1999 - Tal Bachman
The son of well known veteran rocker Randy Bachman stands on his own for his debut, a romantically inspired story put to a rock and pop backdrop that proves his Dad isn't the only musical talent in the family.
You could easily get the idea that this is a man who's spent a lot of time viewing daytime soaps as about 7/10's of the songs on his self-titled release could well be used for love scene "bed" music in any one of the mid-afternoon dramas.
Possessing a maturity probably not yet befitting of his years, Bachman's music is both soft, sincere yet at times nbridled, with little trace of moody angst to offset the latter, his deep lyrics and charming melodies should provide him a steady rolling flow into the stream of the AOR charts with little resistance.

 Tal Bachman - Biography
Tal Bachman is an internationally recognized singer-songwriter from Vancouver, Canada.
Tal initially resisted his father’s relentless - and unorthodox - entreaties to scrap higher education and join a rock&roll band, but eventually his love of music won out, and he began to write songs.
By now officially divorced from his U.S. label and publisher, as well as his management, Tal was completely on his own, professionally speaking, and as if that weren’t enough to deal with, a few sobering discoveries led to his departure from the church and the only way of life he’d ever known.

Living up to the legend of Randy Bachman might not be as overwhelming as living up to the legacy of John Lennon, but Tal Bachman does something neither Julian nor Sean Lennon did -- he made a debut album that has nothing to do whatsoever with his father's music.
Tal Bachman's eponymous debut is a classic pop/rock album, in the vein of '70s pop singer/songwriters that spent as much time crafting the sound of their records as they did the songs.
Since the record is a product of the late '90s, it does have a bit of the self-conscious pastiche that characterizes post-alternative pop, but Tal Bachman is more sincere than his peers.

 Tal Bachman: MusicWorld® Hitmakers Story
Indeed, the 29-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist - the son of '70s Canadian rock icon Randy Bachman of Guess Who/Bachman-Turner Overdrive fame - may be something of a late bloomer by pop's youth-obsessed standards, but that hasn't stopped critics and fans from embracing his self-titled debut disc.
Not surprisingly, Tal grew up surrounded by music, teaching himself to play guitar, piano and drums and eagerly absorbing his father's record collection.
So Bachman quit school and spent the next three years woodshedding intensely at his dad's house in British Columbia, crafting his own compositions and demoing them in his father's home studio.

Like the aforementioned, Bachman combines a reverential understanding of pop music history with an unabashed love for - almost worship of - the powerful chord progression, the unforgettable hook and the affecting lyric.
During his period of introspection, Tal incorporated these musical principles into a group of songs which he sent to a variety of record companies as a self-produced demo.
Produced by Bob Rock (Metallica, The Cult, Veruca Salt, Aerosmith) and Tal Bachman, the album is an explosion of exhilarating, hook-laden, timeless pop/rock - in reality, a distillation of Bachman's lifelong torrid, and sometimes volatile, affair with popular music (and brief fling with philosophy).

The harmony lead guitars in the middle (and the "Layla" slide guitars at the end) of the closing "I Am Free" don't help Bachman deal with a titular concept that he must take so for granted that writing a song about it is impossibly naive at best.

Those who found a lot to like in the New Radicals' update of 1970s and '80s pop-rock for '90s ears may find Tal Bachman's debut similarly appealing.
Seemingly inspired as much by the wide-screen fantasias of Queen and ELO as by the Beatles, the son of former Bachman-Turner Overdrive head Randy offers a series of well-crafted tunes helmed by himself and superstar producer Bob Rock.
Craftsmanship, however, is about the limit of Bachman's vision; his songs rarely rise above clichéd declarations of (and complaints about) love, with pro forma considerations of maturity ("I Wonder") and generational concerns ("Looks Like Rain") failing to lend much weight.

Half the fun of TAL BACHMAN comes from identifying the artists who served as influences for songs that deal with such adult subject matter as aging relatives (the Queen-flavored "I Wonder"), lifelong monogamy (the Nilsson-esque "Beside You"), and total devotion (the Lennon-like lushness of "You're My Everything").

SECTION 3 - tal bachman "tal bachman"
Canadian singer-songwriter Tal Bachman's self-titled debut has some interesting moments here and there but in the end is quite a ho-hum affair.
Against the grain of the folk genre, Bachman modernizes things, incorporating elements of punk, funk and alt-rock, but unfortunately sticks with the same old introspective, hearts-and-flowers lyrical mess most commonly associated with folk music.
It, along with the lullaby rocker "If You Sleep," are really the only strong cuts on the disc, and a sign that Bachman needs to tap into his talent a little more when it comes time for a sophomore effort.
