While Cotabato City is found within the boundaries of Maguindanao, it is independent of the province.
Though it is the regional center of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the city is actually part of the SOCCSKSARGEN region.
During the American period, Cotabato became a district of the Moro Province created in 1903 and a province of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu in 1914.

In the early 17th century, the largest alliance composed of the Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausug, and other Muslim groups was formed by Sultan Kudarat or Cachel Corralat of Maguindanao, whose domain extended from the Davao Gulf to Dapitan on the Zamboanga peninsula.
The Maguindanao batek (color) and design process is basically resist-dyeing, the assumption being that uncontrolled color spread can be resisted by binding, knotting, stitching, or applying wax or paste to the parts of the yarn.

The Armed Forces said the fighting broke out when two Army platoons, deployed as a "blocking force" against the Pentagon kidnap gang, were attacked by some 300 MILF rebels in the village of Gawan in Datu Saudi town at about 8 p.m.
Hundreds of residents from the towns of Talitay, Talayan, Datu Piang and Datu Saudi Ampatuan towns have packed their belongings and fled.
Talayan town is adjacent to Datu Saudi where Monday night's clash occurred.

On the first day, some 40 mujahideen captured and occupied the government town hall of Talayan, which was being utilized by government forces as their field headquarters in their military offensive against the MILF's Camp Badr and Camp Omar and surrounding areas.
The confiscated equipment was later returned, but that did not prevent the national press from accusing the mujahideen of holding the journalists and UN personnel hostage.

ABU Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani and his men are "trapped" in Maguindanao province and it will only be a "matter of time" before they are captured, a military spokesperson said Wednesday.
With the help of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the military sealed off all escape routes in the area of Talayan town, where Janjalani and his men were cornered last week, Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said.
"Due to the assistance and support of the MILF, the group of Khadaffy Janjalani is trapped in the general area of Talayan, Maguindanao," Pascual told a news conference in Camp Aguinaldo.
