The Flint River forms the northeastern boundary, and Talbotton is the seat of the 393-square-mile county.
By 1850 Talbot was the fifth largest county in the state.
According to the 2000 U.S. census the county's population was 6,498 (36.8 percent white, 61.6 percent African American, and 1.3 percent Hispanic).

Talbot County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia.
Talbot County was created by a December 14, 1827, act of the Georgia General Assembly from a portion of Muscogee County.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who were 65 years of age or older.

In 1832 a portion of Marion County was added to Talbot County [Georgia Laws 1832, pg 50] and in 1847 that portion of Muscogee County lying in the fork of Baker and Upatoie Creek was made a part of Talbot county.
It was named for Matthew Talbot (1767-1827), member of legislature, member of the Convention that framed the Constitution of Ga., President of the State Senate, Governor in 1819 after the death of Gov. Rabun until the election of Gov. Clark.

John Williston Talbot was born July 13, 1735 on the Virginia frontier in what is now Bedford County, Virginia, the fourth child and the fourth son of Matthew Talbot and his first wife, Mary Williston.
Talbot County, Georgia was named for him as was the county seat of Talbotton.
John Talbot's plantation, call Mt. Pleasant, was located near the plantation of the widow of General Nathaniel Greene and, indeed, serious questions exist as to whether Eli Whitney was working on the Widow Green's plantation or John Talbot's when he invented the Cotton Gin.

The first 50th class reunion of Talbot County High School was held by the 1948 graduating class on June 27, 1998 at the Bulloch House in Warm Springs, Georgia.
Also invited and attending were students who had attended Talbot County High School with the 1953 graduates but who had moved away prior to their senior year.
