Topic: Talbot Tagora

Talbot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talbot is an automobile brand, whose history is one of the industry's most complex.
In Britain, Sunbeam and Talbot marques were combined in 1938 to form Sunbeam-Talbot.
The entry-level model in the Talbot range from 1982 onwards would be the Talbot Samba, a three-door hatchback based on the Peugeot 104 and also sold as the Citroën LN/LNA.

Info and facts on 'Talbot Tagora'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
Much of the Tagora's early development was done by Chrysler Europe (additional info and facts about Chrysler Europe), and was intended to replace the unsuccessful Chrysler 180.
The Tagora's demise was blamed on many factors - but the main one was styling, which was panned by critics from the car's inception.
As well as the Tagora's akward looking front-end and headlamps, Peugeot's insistence that Talbot used the 505's rear axle, gave the Tagora a ridiculously narrow track in comparison to the width of the bodyshell which didn't help its aesthetic appeal either.

At 5ft 11ins the new Talbot was very wide, but its overall length of 15ft 2ins was no longer than a BMW 5 Series or the Ford Granada.
Talbot succeeded in making the most of the short engines employed to leave a vast area for five people and large amounts of luggage.
They considered the Tagora to be an outstandingly spacious car for passengers and luggage with impressive economy and refinement.

Development of the Talbot Tagora cars
The appearance of the Talbot Tagora in Paris should be noted as an impressive achievement, when one considers the trials and tribulations, it had endured since 1980.
In the UK, the story was a different one, and the Tagora was seen very much as a rival to the all-conquering Ford Granada, which could help Talbot to become established in the UK as a solid "number four" behind Ford, BL and Vauxhall; a position familiar to the company - from the Rootes days.
When journalists got their hands on the Tagora for the first time at the Morocco launch in March 1981, the story was one of chassis and engine competence, overshadowed by a lack of visual charisma.

4Car Feature - Secret performance saloons - from Channel 4
There were high hopes for the French-built Tagora when it was revealed (to muted applause) in 1981, though it wasn't quite the all-new model Talbot made it out to be.
Peugeot owned Talbot (formerly Chrysler Europe), so much of the suspension (struts and semi-trailing arms) came from the Peugeot 604, as did the SX model's thirsty carburettor-fed V6 engine.
Talbot dealers braced themselves for the rush but it never came, despite some fairly warm reviews in the press.

The Talbot Tagora was launched in an uncertain time for Talbot following the takeover by PSA in 1978.
The Tagora's production run, which spanned just over four years and 19,400 cars demonstrates that the car was the wrong product, launched at the wrong time.
The Tagora was styled in Coventry and engineered in France to replace the group's unsuccessful 2-Litre.

 Talbot Matra Murena
The 1.6 got its engine from the Talbot Alpine/Solara range - a very robust, humble pushrod engine, and the 2.2 engine was the one used in the Talbot Tagora (the one that looked like an enlarged Solara)
The chassis was now completely warm galvanised from the factory (actually the Murena was the first mass-produced car to undergo this treatment), and the body was then riveted/bonded in place, - producing a very long lasting car indeed.
The suspension consists of longitudinal torsionbars in front (as on the Simca-1100 and Talbot Alpine) - but at the back the transverse torsion bars have been replaced with McPherson struts.

From 1916, the chief engineer was Swiss-native Georges Roesch and in the early 1920's, Talbot built a number of successful models, including the 14/45 hp, or Talbot 105, which was first built in 1926.
In 1979, following the acquisition of Chrysler's European operations by Peugeot, the Talbot name was revived as Peugeot rebadged the Horizon, the Alpine and the Avenger as Talbots.
Over the next few years, the large Talbot Tagora executive saloon, and Samba supermini were introduced.

An Apology to the Peugeot 309
The 309 was never a high-priority project for the new PSA company; Peugeot's range had dwindled to almost nothing so it was rushed in to replace the truly ancient 305 with mainly Chrysler/Talbot/Simca Alpine/1307-1308 running gear, parts-bin switchgear, an engine based on an ancient Simca design and doors from its little brother, the 205.
