New South Wales Rivers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The two main categories of rivers in New South Wales, are those which rise in the Great Dividing Range and flow directly eastwards to the sea, and those which rise on the other side of the crest of the range and flow westward towards the desert.
The inland rivers have little water, are also subject to flooding, and their limited resources are extensively used for irrigation in the more arid inland agricultural districts of the State.
The second group of inland-flowing rivers in New South Wales are those which rise in the southern part of the State and combine directly with the Murray River which forms the southern border of New South Wales with Victoria.

NSW SoE 1997 - Chapter 3: Water - Core Indicator 3B: River salinity - What does the data show?
In the northern parts of the basin (Culgoa River, northern border rivers and the Castlereagh-Macquarie), median EC decreased as the streams flowed westward to their convergence with the Barwon River.
In the Lachlan, Darling and southern rivers, EC increased with distance downstream, with the exception of falls in median EC in the mid and lower Murrumbidgee related to diversion of river water for irrigation.
The region to the north-east of Dubbo, draining into the Talbragar River (a tributary of the Macquarie River) and the upper reaches of the Castlereagh River, is distinctive for its high salinity (median EC 769 mS/cm and 660 mS/cm respectively) among a grouping of otherwise low to medium salinity streams.
