Tales from Topographic Oceans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tales From Topographic Oceans is the sixth studio album by British progressive rock band Yes.
There was also dissatisfaction with the album from one of the band members, Rick Wakeman, who showed his distaste for the album by eating curry on stage while songs from the album were performed.
For prog rock's detractors, Tales is the genre's nadir.

 Progressive or Excessive
With Tales, they may have reached for something musically that was just beyond their collective grasp at the time; so much of Tales was so new, it might have been better if they had eased toward the scale of the album a little more gradually (this was, by the way, Wakeman's position all along).
Unfortunately, the Tales sides--unlike the pieces on Close to the Edge--never really got the live exposure that they deserved; except for "Ritual," the other sides were dropped from the live show after the Tales tour (at least, I never heard them do these tracks after 1974).
However imperfect it may be, Tales From Topographic Oceans is a high-water mark in history of the progressive-rock style.

A Discussion of Tales from Topographic Oceans by Alan Gullette
Tales and histories and stories can be taken in the sense of merely our past lives with their particulars or in the sense of a mental structure, paradigm, or model that acts as a matrix of our experiences.
The velvet of the sailors is the topographic ocean, of which they shall sing in order to call light, though we also get "to call light the soul" due to the lack of punctuation.
"Tales from Topographic Oceans" is clearly philosophical as well as religious in nature and import, as I have tried to show, and, because of its difficult nature, the song deserves one to "tender" it "clearer" in a fuller explication of its meaning.

 Tales From Topographic Oceans Review
TFTO was released on January 9, to get that year of rock perfection off to a good, if strange, start.
The only bad thing about having TFTO on CD is that the little flute notes at the beginning of this song kind of jar me out of the happy warm fuzzy feeling at the end of RSOG.
Like the other day I searched for "Topographic Oceans" and I found a few pages on this same album, but they were just track listings, lyrics, and liner notes.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Tales From Topographic Oceans
As a whole Tales expresses what has lately been completely missing from the crap fed to the dull eyed masses by the marketers of MTV's musical sludge; and that missing element is creativity.
Whether you feel that Tales is the orgasmic climax after four years of foreplay or the wet spot on the sheet after Close to the Edge, Yes should be applauded for trying, and in most cases succeeding, in pushing beyond boundaries that most musicians can't even approach.
Tales shattered musical boundaries completely, leaving the traumatized pundits of musical conservatism lying in a pretentious heap.

Tales from Topographic Oceans - Wikipedia

"Tales" is a deeply philosophical album that is not for the meditative faint of heart.
"Tales" isn't a perfect album, no, and it is a little stretched out at times, but when it's good (which is most of the time) it is a deeply evocative, beautiful piece of music, and a very special record, made all the more special by this re-release.
Yes has always been masterful at reaching for the big moment, and here, the big moments roll over you like waves in the ocean, one after the next, the music rising, falling, carrying you along for the ride with an inevitability that can't be described, only experienced.

Tales consists of four songs, each and album-side's length.
This proves effective enough on Close to the Edge, but with Tales, the band's pretentiousness simply stiffles the music.
The only outstanding song on Tales is "The Revealing Science of God", a monumental work which is the absolute heart of this sprawling album.

Tales, while being one of my favorite Yes albums, it is not my all time favorite.
I saw the band on this tour and found the whole of the album at one sitting a little too much at the time particularly as it hadn't been released in time for the tour.
The parts of Tales that are good are VERY good, but there's some parts are kind of run into the ground (especially in The Ancient), or just didn't need to be there.

All they got was Topographic Oceans shoveled down their throats.
The first one, the "Tales" set, had the giant bug, the organ pipes (also referred to as a whale skeleton, but not by Dean), a tunnel on to the stage which was demolished by the road crew half way through the tour, and some little fiberglass bubbles on the ground.
Tour coincides with the upcoming release of a double LP set by the group, 'Tales from the Topographic Ocean,' produced by Eddie Offord and Yes.

Intricately layered and somewhat difficult to casually absorb, Tales brought Yes to a brink that took several years to resolve.
They found and merged Patrick Moraz into the band and produced a worthy set that showcased their evolutionary ability to move away from the intricacies and confinement of Tales and move forward seemingly from Close to the Edge.

Tales From Topographic Oceans, is, to some, the recording that put the lid on the dustbin into which Prog Rock had (by 1974) already fallen.
There is something to be said for both opinions but on balance, this is still an outstanding creation which, even after 30+ years, still sounds as fresh and challenging as it did upon its initial release.

Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans was the one major '70s-era work by the group that failed to get captured on any official concert release.
The bootleg double-CD Topographic fills in the missing hole in their repertory, between Yessongs and Yesshows, presenting live performances of the entire Tales from Topographic Oceans, recorded in Detroit on February 28,1974, coupled with a live BBC performance of "The Revealing Science of God" from November 1, 1973.

It's easy to immediately like a good pop album because the songs are short, you're given enough opportunity to let the hooks sink in, and even if you don't remember how 4 or 5 songs go after the album is finished, you still remember the best bits.
I wouldn't go accusing Mike of plagiarism, but it is a creepy detail, indeed, knowing that both Tales From Topographic Oceans and Incantations are double albums with only one musical piece.
