Tales of Phantasia was extremely impressive for its day, featuring full voice acting, a theme song complete with lyrics, and a fast-paced combat system that played like a fighting game, but didn’t manage to make the journey to the western hemisphere until now.
This version of Tales of Phantasia is significantly easier than the SFC version, and shouldn’t present a whole lot of difficulty for the average gamer.
While receiving Tales of Phantasia after having been denied it for so long may go some ways towards soothing this disappointment, the fact is that the GBA remake of Tales of Phantasia simply isn’t a very good version of the game.

Tales of Phantasia (gba: 2006): Reviews
It’s true that Tales of Phantasia isn’t the huge RPG that it was back in the SNES era, or even the shadow of newer RPGs from last generation, but it is still a warm, heart-filling experience that anyone who can overcome hours of tough, continuous battling will enjoy.
Ten minutes into Tales of Phantasia, you know pretty much what you are getting into: a pleasantly involving, perfectly traditional role-playing game that sticks to all the old-school conventions that recall the glory days of hand-drawn adventures.
While Tales of Phantasia may not shine with the glory that it did in its prime, there are still parts of the game that are worth checking out.

Phantasia, to start, is an action RPG, although not in the sense of The Legend of Zelda and Secret of Mana.
Moreover, Phantasia is perhaps the first RPG to suffer from camera problems, since when enemies and your allies alike use attack spells, the view of the field switches from the caster to the target, sometimes throwing you off.
Perhaps one of the strongest points of Tales of Phantasia is the soundtrack, full of beautiful, dramatic, and upbeat tunes, including the opening theme song, The Dream Will Never Die, actually with sung lyrics, a surprise for a Super Famicom game.

The first and only Tales game I played prior to this one was Tales of Symphonia, and I loved it.
To confuse things even more, knowing that Symphonia was actually developed years after Phantasia, this should be a fault with that game rather than this one, but given the fact that most people who aren't from Japan will most likely be playing them in reverse order, it feels like this one is the rehash.
Overall, Tales of Phantasia is a solid RPG with the refreshing active battle system the series is famous for.

That Tales of Phantasia should peek its head around the curtain of GBA gaming so late in the system's life with scarcely a ripple of applause seems immensely unfair.
Still, marvellously you could be completely oblivious to all this history, significance and nostalgia and still have a good time with Tales of Phantasia.
Perhaps it's because we're used to developer hand-holding these days but the lack of any quick menu reference of current quest objectives can leave you overwhelmed and lost - unsure of quite where you're meant to be headed, what you're meant to be collecting or to whom you need to be speaking at any point.
