In spite of elements that may seem dated, the story continues to resonate with the power of the archetype, telling a tale of a hero who uses not gifts from the gods, but his own intelligence, skills and indomitable will to overcome the awesome challenges that Life throws his way.

 Sleeping Giant Comics
During his five-year run in the pages of Tales of Suspense (TOS) (issues 39 to 99), the invincible Iron Man met many a foe; most notably, perhaps, were the Mandarin, the Black Widow, and (for my money at least) Whiplash.
Because they shared the spotlight in TOS each month, their adventures tended to be rather short (much like the stories in Strange Tales, a magazine that was shared by Dr. Strange and Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tales to Astonish which was shared by the Hulk and the Sub-Mariner).
I guess the moral of the tale is, not everyone lives happily ever after (or, you live by the crush, you die by the crush).

Captain America appeared in Tales of Suspense #58 (October 1964) with Iron Man, and became the co-star of Tales of Suspense until after Tales of Suspense #99, when Iron man spun off to his own title, and Tales of Suspense changed its name to Captain America with issue #100.
Captain America starting with issue #100 also allowed fans to avoid any confusion as to what issue numbers were referenced; the older Captain America series from Timely never reached three digits.
