 Psybertron Knowledge Modelling WebLog
Talking of brain activity reminds me of Adam Zeman's talk on the scientific basis for consciuousness at Cambridge Crosstalk Society in June 2003, in collaboration with the Cambridge Centre for Quantum Computation.
Talking of life stories, in the same break I've been working on updating the Pirsig Timeline (pending).
Zeman's book is relatively unsophisticated philosophically, but after passing gratuitous references to duality and quantum physics, really just leaves a number of open ends about how various perceptual and physiological phenomena leave plenty of doors open.

sci.physics.relativity Welcome - read this first!
It will accept talk about alternative theories and other controversial discussions about relativity which would be outside the charter of most other sci newsgroups, as well as more mainstream discussion on physics as described by Einstein's theory of relativity and modern research to develop more unified theories combining relativity and quantum mechanics.
In general, threads in this group should -not- be crossposted to sci.physics, unless they involve quantum physics or grand unification schemes which lie outside the topics suggested above.
If you respond to a message which is cross-posted to irrelevant groups, please remove the other groups from the Newsgroup line in the header of your response, or use the Followup line in the header to direct further followups to just one or two groups.

 Joseph H. Eberly
Recent results from his group include calculations of single-photon wave functions localized in free space that exhibit the binding effects of quantum memory, an examination of cross-talk in qubit chains, and the derivation of a novel "dark area" theorem that governs nonlocal effects in coupled optical pulses.
Eberly received his B.S. in Physics from Pennsylvania State University (1957) and his Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University (1962).
Eberly's research interests are in the general field of Theoretical Quantum Optics and AMO science.

 Abstract
In this talk, I will present rigorous results pertaining to a well-known model for gravitational collapse, which has been heuristically and numerically studied for many years now in the physics literature.
Besides relating to strong cosmic censorship and the fate of observers who dare cross the event horizon, this law has independent interest, as it can be interpreted in terms of observations in the astrophysical regime.
These phenomena raise fundamental questions, such as the validity of the principle of determinism in the context of classical physics.

Waking Up in Time - Book from Origin Press
The urgent physics message that evolves into a cry for spiritual awakening is a tricky bridge to cross… The nice difference in this book from other (either science or self-help) books is that the author does try to tie these two areas together.
Peter Russell: "I cite that as one example of a number of prophecies, which talk about a time when humanity gets caught up in materialism and takes itself to the edge of disaster.
Waking Up In Time is every man and woman's manifesto for awakening to the mounting global crisis while deepening their connection to inner peace and transformation.

 Howard Lovy's NanoBot
U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative officials often talk about "converging technologies," that is, connecting all the sciences – physics, chemistry, biology, information technology – and making connections as all these disciplines converge at the nanoscale.
Nanotech experts at the U.S. Department of Defense believe that the DoD is spending enough money to support all their nanotech programs, nanomaterials included, because of cross-fertilization by the other federal agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI).
Nanotech is not only about size, but also the ability to engineer the nanoparticle to do what you want it to do and when you want it done.

Indiana Biocomplexity Consortium to host conference
This is the sixth in a series of workshops organized to address important topics in the field of biocomplexity -- a cross-disciplinary area fusing physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and the life sciences.
His talk is the prelude to a workshop hosted by the Indiana Biocomplexity Consortium entitled "Complex Behavior in Unicellular Organisms" on the IU Bloomington campus from Wednesday through Sunday (May 12-16).
One of the main goals of the biocomplexity conference is to encourage conversations and collaborations between scientists who would not normally attend the same meeting or speak the same scientific language.

 LostCircuits, Tech Advice Guide
Cross talk, ground bouncing and signal ringing, along with too tight timing windows have left no margins for improvement beyond ATA PI-7 (UATA-133) and, thus, the industry is confronted with the paradox that the actual storage media such as hard disk drives outperform the connectivity.
It is clear that parallel interfaces are pushing the limitations of what can be achieved without violating the laws of physics while maintaining a reasonable cost point.
Parallel interfaces, in particular, the advanced technology attachment (ATA) standard have evolved since the mid 1980s from transfer rates of 3.3 MB/sec in ATA-1 to currently 100 MB/sec in ATA PI-6, also known as Ultra ATA 100.

Encyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology - Fabry-Perots, fiber amplifiers, fiber sensors, fluorescence, frequency metrology
It can have important deleterious effects in optical fiber communications, particularly in the context of wavelength division multiplexing, where it can cause cross-talk between different wavelength channels.
This is very useful for a number of applications, including fields like atomic and molecular physics, ultrafast X-ray science, advanced material studies, ultrafast chemical dynamics, and biology.
It is applied for spectroscopy, most commonly in the form of coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), where one detects a high-frequency signal generated in a sample from two input waves with slightly lower frequency.

If the pulse train were perfectly periodic – not only concerning the intensity versus time but also with respect to the electric field –, all the frequencies of the lines in the spectrum would be integer multiples of the pulse repetition rate.
