10:45 Invited talk: Advances in Relational Data Mining, Nada Lavrac
Multi-Relational Data Mining (MRDM) is the multi-disciplinary field dealing with knowledge discovery from relational databases consisting of multiple tables.
The field aims at integrating results from existing fields such as ILP, KDD, ML and Relational Databases, as well as at producing new techniques.

Blueprint for Success - CIO Magazine March 15, 1997
Data modeling tools from vendors such as Logic Works Inc., Powersoft brand from Sybase Inc., and IBM Corp. facilitate the construction of an enterprise's data structure by creating optimal data structures, but they are useful only to a point.
HR was too busy to devote much time to helping IS, so instead of explaining the process in detail and gathering everybody together for a group brain-dump, the IS team split up and went directly to users' work places to talk with them in small groups.
That makes updating the data more difficult because the same piece of data is stored in several places, which may work for data warehouses that are primarily used for queries and rarely updated.

 Mark Bernstein: May0301
Many people like to play down the role of craft in weblogs, and it's almost heresy to talk about craft in the digital storytelling world, where being "natural" is prized above all.
Swartz's idea is to read the XML file and make it all available in a data structure, with a nice syntax for getting at parts of it.
But everyone was busy, and eager to get back to work and get their ideas down, and nobody was much worried about whether they had a job, or might lose one, or if their funding would be cut.

ORBEL / DMOR05 - Interface between Data Mining and Operations Research one-day symposium
The use of data mining techniques in bioinformatics is continuously confronted with the problem of managing datasets where the number of features is much larger than the number of samples (high feature-to-sample ratio datasets).
Constraint based mining and inductive databases are a recent research stream within data mining.
In recent years, mining frequent itemsets has been one of the most active research areas in data mining.

 Kant's Philosophical Development
Although Kant's conjecture is false (quakes are usually due to plate tectonics), it is methodologically beyond reproach, employing known data (mining explosions) to formulate a testable hypothesis.
In the absence of data, this effect is conjectural.
The energy field (force stretched out as space) returns there as well, as the only exception to Kant's critical rule not to talk about the intelligible features of mind-independent nature.

 PDDM 2001
Invited Talk: Ubiquitous Mining of Distributed Data, Hillol Kargupta, University of Maryland Baltimore County
As the volume of data increases, it is clear that both parallel and distributed data mining techniques are required to make the whole knowledge discovery process scalable and interactive.
This workshop will target papers on high performance parallel and distributed methods, as well as mining on distributed and heterogeneous datasets.

SLIS IUB > News > Sept. 24 Colloquium: Social Network and Semantic Web
This talk will be of interest to colleagues in library and information science, informatics, computer science, and the social sciences who study the design and technologies of the semantic web, social networks, visualization, data mining, and the ethics of collecting data on social relations.
The Friend-of-a-Friend (FOAF) project was begun in 1999 to explore the application of semantic web technologies (RDF/XML) to people's personal details, such as their interests, occupations and personal affiliations, with the aim of facilitating social network data-mining.
These relations are analyzed statistically to identify a set of natural social groups described by the data.

Senate Cuts Surveillance Funds > TIA Goes MIA: Senate Defense Bill Cuts Surveillance Funds > July 18, 2003
The program has been in trouble at least since January as the senate passed the Data Mining Moratorium Act of 2003, essentially shutting down all DOD and Homeland Security data mining activities "similar related to the Total Information Awareness program."
The $369 billion Department of Defense (DOD) budget the Senate unanimously approved Thursday included no funding for the data mining initiative, which had been a lightning rod for civil libertarian and privacy advocate ire since its existence was made public last year.
Born as the Total Information Awareness project at the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), TIA always struck some observers as more talk than technology.

Shaffer also told GSN that the ultimate goal that he and his Able Danger colleagues are pursuing is the re-establishment of a similar data mining capability, in a newly-formed program the military is calling Able Providence.
Much of this data crunching was facilitated by private contractors, including Raytheon Company, of Waltham, MA, and Orion Scientific (now part of SRA International, Inc., based in Fairfax, VA) which helped execute the sophisticated data mining software packages, said Shaffer.
Just out of curiosity, why was Congressman Weldon willing to talk first with GSN about Able Danger?

Mat Stephen's SQL Server WebLog : Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services – Unified Dimensional Model (UDM). Can you get your head round it? If you do BI, you’ll need to!
UDM has five new dimension types, Role Playing, Fact, Reference, Data Mining and Many to many.
Whilst a UDM can gather data from numerous data sources, the need to cleanse data still requires a data warehouse.
I have read and re-read articles that talk about the UDM, some internal, some public, and I’m still trying to get my head all the way round it.

In addition, in the talk "Data mining with sparse grids using simplicial basis functions" by Jochen Garcke of the University of Bonn at the KDD (Research Track 5: Classification and Regression) the sparse grid classification method is described.
The method is implemented in the prudsys DISCOVERER 2000, a universal data mining tool developed by prudsys that will be presented at the KDD 2001.
Sparse grids where developed in the 90ies and are used for solving high-dimensional partial differential equations.

The scale of the data sets generated by this work has necessitated the pioneering of new informatics systems for process control, data validation and data mining.
In this study the creation of genetic diversity on a genome scale in Arabdiopsis is coupled to broad-based, high throughput metabolic profiling.
Metanomics has used systematic overexpression and knockout approaches to create large populations of Arabidopsis mutants altered in the activity of individual genes.

[arrangementer] Top Datamining Talk on Wednesday 9/2 - 11:15 at lille UP1, Datalogisk Institut by Professor Joydeep Ghosh
Distributed Clustering with Limited Knowledge Sharing Joydeep Ghosh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin While data mining algorithms invariably operate on centralized data, in practice related information is often acquired and stored at geographically distributed locations due to organizational or operational constraints.
Centralization of such data before analysis may not be desirable because of computational or bandwidth costs.
Time permitting, I'll outline the equivalence of rate distortion theory and maximum likelihood estimation, and show how the information bottleneck method readily falls out as a special case of rate distortion tradeoff for Bregman divergences.

The Greens - Victoria : Media Releases : Largest polluting mine being pushed through red tape - (15 May 2002)
Whilst the government and shires talk of a sustainable world, they are quietly rushing through permits to deprive the Glenelg River of environmental flowand to set the scene for wide-ranging environmental damage.
A public consultation process on what we can do to improve the health of our rivers has been extended to 17th May. Deakin staff and students will also be collecting data about the condition of the region's river systems, including the Glenelg, Hopkins and Merri systems, all of which have problems needing attention.

So a lot of things that you wouldn't have thought of doing in the past about querying a rich database, about data mining through information, that will just be so easy to do because the flow of information will go across the network in a very rapid way.
In fact, in many cases, they'll be able to expand their business because they'll be able to take their unique value-added and go up on the Internet and talk about that and therefore attract in a larger customer base than they could have previously.
So businesses where people are moving around a lot and they don't have this regular structure that forces them to share information-electronic tools I think are even more valuable in that case.
