 The Craft of Copy Editing
And this advice from Perlman: "An editor needs to be able to explain what the problem is and propose a solution, not just cite 'rules.' Even at papers where copy editors are not 'allowed' to ask questions or talk to reporters.
When reporters and higher-ups see that a copy editor is paying attention to the content, and cares not just about what the (stupid) reporter got wrong but also about what the reader might not understand and carefully and logically points it out, they may listen.
Be assured that you will not be the first copy editor to pen (OK, keyboard) a head on an Iowa story asking if this is heaven or on a sports salaries story demanding that someone show you the money.

 Interview with Livia Ruzic
Dialogue is something that already exists in the original production recording; most people, even those working in other areas of filmmaking find it hard to understand what a dialogue editor needs to do to it.
On big budget feature films, the postproduction sound work is almost like an assembly line, with many sound editors working on different sections of the sound – effects editors, atmosphere editors, foley editors, music editors and dialogue editors.

If a reporter proposes an "evergreen" story that could be done at any time, an editor could reasonably respond that the story could be done at any time, which often means something else is more pressing now.
