 Indian Writing in English
A major reason behind this (as has been discussed before) is that English is not the lingua franca of the country; it is not the language of the masses.
And when the IWE writer's Indian characters all talk and think in English, he is asking the reader for another indulgence, for a higher degree of suspension of disbelief.
This otherness of English creates a state of friction instead of cohesion in the body of Indian writing as a whole.

Karnad adds that writing in English brings international recognition while translation into other regional languages reaches a far broader Indian audience.

Tabucchi’s works translated into English and published by New Directions include Pereira Declares: A Testimony (1996), Requiem: A Hallucination (1994), The Edge of the Horizon (1990), Indian Nocturne (1989), Letter from Casablanca (1986), and Little Misunderstandings of No Importance (1987).
Antonio Tabucchi is used to writing his novels on hot, empty July afternoons in Lisbon, where he lives for six months of the year.
