Journal of Popular Film and Television: Reading the Kung Fu film in an American context: from Bruce Lee to Jackie Chan - Critical Essay
In defining the Kung Fu craze as "a deceptively complex moment," Desser speculates that the phenomenon could be related to the rebelliousness of the black and youth audiences as well as to the American trauma of the Vietnam War.
Chan's success in the United States should be understood in terms of the transformation of Kung Fu cinema from its preoccupation with racial politics envisioned by Bruce Lee to its current embracing of multiculturalism, which has been stipulated by Chan's strategic move from tragedy to comedy.
In alluding to a time when China was repeatedly defeated and humiliated by Western powers and Japan, Chiao argues that the Kung Fu film functioned as a means of catharsis for the overseas Chinese, who have come to terms with their experiences of colonialism and imperialism and reconfigure their cultural identities outside mainland Communist China.

To have these two reunite, along with other Kung Fu Hustle alumni such as Chi Chung Lam and Kai Man Tin (who also co-starred in Chow's Shaolin Soccer), is a real treat which combined with CGI enhanced physical comedy makes for a good time.
She instead tries to use Mahjong as a form of mental therapy similar to that used with Alzheimer's patients in order to stimulate the parts of the brain most affected by Wong's injuries.
However, the grand Mahjong tournament at the end of the film just didn't have the kind of impact it should have, mostly due to my lack of understanding when it comes to the intricacies of Mahjong.

 Kung Fu Mahjong 2 (2005)
Unlike the first Kung Fu Mahjong, KFM2 couldn't eke out a number one box-office showing, so sequel talk may be premature.
Kung Fu Mahjong 2 is the best sequel thus far to a film made in 2005.
Unfortunately, there's far too little of the Kung Fu Hustle duo in Kung Fu Mahjong 2, and the fight sequences have been reduced to quick bathroom-set beatings.

 IGN: Kung Fu Hustle Review
Otherwise, the interview is typical pop-promo star worship, but then again, this is Stephen Chow and Kung Fu Hustle we're talking about, and as far as I'm concerned, it's not possible to get enough of this talented director or his spectacular film.
But then again, that could be said of the entire picture; with Kung Fu Hustle, Chow delivers a knockout blow not only to your immediate moviegoing expectations, but to the very limits of cinematic possibility, combining the sublime and the mundane in ways that haven't yet been imagined, but definitively work.
During Kung Fu Hustle's theatrical run, I enjoyed the rare chance to speak with Chow himself, and reviewed the film for IGN Filmforce:

Pedro Fernandez is doing such a fine job with his radio show, "Ring Talk," which can be heard every Sunday night on stations across the country.
