Thames Television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thames became the personification of commercial public-service television, with a strong mix of drama, current affairs and comedy.
Thames was originally based in Rediffusion's former headquarters, Television House, until the opening of the newly-built Thames Television House on Euston Road in the early 1970s.
Thames was replaced by Carlton Television at midnight on December 31, 1992/January 1, 1993.

 A Thames special
It is strongly arguable that given hindsight it was probably a good thing that Thames lost its franchise when it did, meaning that its reputation for good quality programming lived on intact without having to suffer the fate of a forced takeover/sell off or decline through neglect as a result of a lack of regulation.
Thames was a product of a 'shotgun marriage' between the UK ABC and Rediffusion's television production divisions, with their respective parent companies remaining separate from the newly created entity.
Thames was in many respects the cosmopolitan 'city-dweller' both in terms of its programming and its presentation, with the long-running and popular London skyline ident in particular illustrating the values that Thames stood for.

Guardian | Guru who says he will reinvigorate BBC1
The outgoing chief executive of independent production giant Talkback Thames was unveiled as the replacement for Lorraine Heggessey, who in a neat twist announced earlier this year that she was taking his current job.
But Mr Fincham, who during his time at Talkback Thames oversaw a wide range of popular shows including Jamie's Kitchen, Pop Idol, Grand Designs and The Lost Prince, said it was important for the channel to retain the ambition to appeal to mass audiences.
The company was bought by Pearson for £62m in 2000, a move that netted Mr Fincham an estimated £20m, and was then taken over by German media giant RTL in 2003, when Talkback and Thames merged and he was made chief executive.

Carlton Television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Having failed to oust Thames Television from its London weekday slot in 1987, Carlton finally succeeded in the 1991/92 round for reasons that were seen as political.
Unlike Thames (which was both a production company and a broadcaster, and following a merger, continues to produce programmes as TalkBack Thames), Carlton has always commissioned programming from independent production companies.
In recent years, changes in rules concerning media ownership enabled Carlton to buy out many of the other ITV stations, including Central Independent Television, Westcountry, and it also acquired HTV via Granada, as well as the rights to the archives of ITC Entertainment and its former sister company ATV, and the Rank film archive.
