Talking Heads (plays) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talking Heads is a series of dramatic monologues written for BBC television by the acclaimed British playwright Alan Bennett.
Although the plays deal with a variety of subjects, there are certain recurring themes, such as loneliness, hubris, and romantic irony.
Most of the plays give some hint as to where they are set - mostly in Leeds, although not, as Bennett stresses, the real Leeds, rather one that exists in his head.

Introducing talk of bodies, sexuality, babies and tangible women (rather than those in Remain in Light, upon whose hips “the world swings”), Little Creatures was met with awkward silence from many critics who weren’t sure where Byrne’s sense of distance and anti-linear lyricism had gone.
Talking Heads, Byrne’s primary though no longer exclusive medium, was thus often perceived to recycle memorable touchstones of previous Heads successes, particularly estrangement from the stereotypical tropes of Middle-American life.

Talking Heads were one of the first and best purveyors of "dance music you can't dance to," churning out songs that had (on paper) many of the same raw materials as "regular" pop music, but that put these elements together in such a wholely bizarre way as to distinguish themselves from everybody else.
In the end, then, this is so necessary, not only for Heads fans, but also for any pop music fan in general, that the fact that we had to wait so long for a CD issue of this seems in retrospect like an unpardonable crime by the music industry.
This and '77 may not be the best Talking Heads albums, but they amply demonstrate that, when left to their own devices, this group could still pull out some friggin' interesting music.

Nonetheless, the Talking Heads were in my view not just the biggest but most consistently listenable of the American New Wave acts, recording a half-dozen commercially successful albums over a decade, breaking ground with Byrne's electronic funk and World Music affectations, and always retaining enough musical integrity to make them a critics' favorite.
Things go rapidly downhill on the second disc, though: the Heads convinced themselves they were a genuine World Beat funk band, and they crowded the stage with additional musicians including Belew, Busta Jones on bass, Bernie Worrell on organ, Nona Hendryx on backing vocals, and more singers and percussionists.
The Heads now reconvened for a self-produced studio album, and indeed they're completely in command of their patented, tension-building funk/New Wave dance recipe ("Girlfriend Is Better," livened with a catchy "stop making sense" refrain).
