Back then, the Tall Dwarfs represented the D.I.Y. & home taping ethic and aesthetic at their purest songs were all recorded at home (performed in bedrooms, hallways and the like) and the band produced all of their own videos and promotional materials.

New Zealand's Tall Dwarfs not only whistle, they jingle, jangle, gurgle, grumble, grunt, sputter, bang on tables and guitars, play crumhorn, clarinet, clavinet, spoons and shake an angry bee-colony's worth of tambourine.
The inspiration for Tall Dwarfs comes from somewhere between the alienated dementia of the Beatles' "Blue Jay Way" and comic horror movies on late-night TV.
It's got the Dwarfs' highly imaginative percussion and the same delightfully fuzzed-under sense of noise.

Tall Dwarfs: Weeville / Fork Songs: Pitchfork Record Review
By the time the Dwarfs-- Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate-- hit these two albums, their recording had cleared up into intelligibility, leaving behind the pure lo-fi ethos: all the raw personality, rough charm, and weird personal quirk of music rigged together in solitude, somewhere over by the closet.
Add the Dwarfs' tendency toward psychedelic sound, and you can probably guess why these reissues are brought to you in part by members of Olivia Tremor Control.
These days there's plenty of interest in those woodshed psychedelics, and while the Dwarfs' version of it is anything but spaced-out or transcendent, it packs plenty of the same claustrophobic strangeness-- and plenty of the same bad-idea experiments-- that run from Jad Fair to modern-day Brooklyn.

The brisk sales of their re-released albums, "Killer Dwarfs," "Big Deal," "Dirty Weapons," and "Method to the Madness," steeled their resolve to deliver on the live album fans have been demanding for years.

Tall Dwarfs make no secret of it and many of these songs have a feeling of homage about them.
Tall Dwarfs records are very much a labor of love, the materiality of the recording process itself seeming to be as important to Knox and Bathgate as the final product.

In 1982, Bathgate relocated from Dunedin to Christchurch; with the distance between him and Knox now totalling some 750 kilometers, Tall Dwarfs was relegated to a side project, with both men meeting once or twice annually to record and perform the occasional live date.
With 1984's SlugBucketHairyBreathMonster, Tall Dwarfs scored their most successful record to date; the track "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" was a cult hit across New Zealand, and with its inclusion on the Flying Nun compilation Tuatara, it received significant international exposure as well.
The long out-of-print first four Tall Dwarfs EPs were mined for the subsequent Hello Cruel World best-of collection; the first of their records to earn proper worldwide release, it won them considerable global media coverage.

Splendid Magazine reviews Tall Dwarfs: The Sky Above The Mud Below
They've been Tall Dwarfs for more than twenty years -- and while, like many other iconic New Zealand acts, the elapsed time between their albums is often longer than most Stateside bands' careers, the quality of their output always puts paid to complaints about its quantity and frequency.
Yes, a new Tall Dwarfs record is cause for celebration, but such is the looseness of Knox and Bathgate's association that fans can never be entirely certain that the band still exists until they emerge, locust-like, from their extended hibernation and drop another record on an unsuspecting world.
Listen to "You Want Me Shimmy" to hear the Tall Dwarfs at their most self-indulgent; it's ninety-odd seconds of sub-JSBX dirty blues silliness that jolts the album off its rails, then dovetails into the equally incongruous -- but conceptually superior -- quasi-Aerosmith romp "How the West Was Won".

Establishing the post-punk and independent scenes in New Zealand, Tall Dwarfs were arguably the first of indie rock's pioneers to take part in the home taping phenomenon.
The record, released almost 20 years after their basement rock beginnings, was based on the idea that home tapers from around the globe would record bits and pieces of songs, send them to Knox and Bathgate, and the Dwarfs would then make songs from the basic structures of what they received.
The result is an astoundingly fluid document of lo-fi weirdness, with its hand in every imaginable genre of music from folk to blues to punk to quirky out-rock to chamber pop.

Tall Dwarfs: The Sky Above the Mud Below Aversion.com Review
For a band that’s been credited with launching an ethos as widespread in the indie world as home recording and the lo-fi aesthetic, The Tall Dwarfs maintain a remarkably low profile, even in the usually plugged-in world of underground music.
Swallowed by the revolution they started, The Tall Dwarfs don’t shine as pioneers, luminaries or anything out of the ordinary.
The Dwarfs go a bit too far on this record (which is augmented by eight tracks that originally appeared on the International Tall Dwarfs EP), mostly due to the avalanche of material that makes the final cut on this record.

But back in the 80s concepts were still to be had, and the Killer Dwarfs popped up with one of the most amusing and original ideas in ages.
Each taking the surname of Dwarf (just like the Ramones did years before), the band played up the idea of being vertically challenged, especially singer Russ Dwarf, who drove a tricycle in the band's videos, as well as arriving on stage in a small crate.
The slamming skinsmanship of Darrell Dwarf just jumps right off the disc and makes one realize that the double bass drumming of today is completely unnecessary.

Chris Knox & The Tall Dwarfs Discography - Slipcue E-Zine
Quirky oddball 4-track pioneers who have mixed disjointed lo-fi ditties with sustained moments of pure pop brilliance, New Zealand's Tall Dwarfs have been around the kiwi scene since the late '70s, when they were in the legendary punk bands Enemy and Toy Love.
Leveling a scathing and jaundiced glance at the fetishistic materialism of the workaday world, Chris and Alec Bathgate ask, "is 9-to-5 really your idea of fun?" A catchy, clever critique of yuppie culture, with a strikingly prescient jab at folks with cell phones, a full decade or so before the fad hit crisis proportions.
Naturally, this will feel familiar to Tall Dwarfs fans, but Bathgate tempers the quirkiness with a bit more melody and less aggro, less pessimistic feel than Knox has on his solo albums.
