  Tall Tales
A tall tale is a special kind of hero story because the heroes of tall tales are 'larger than life'.
- A tall tale is a uniquely American story form that features (1) a larger-than-life, or superhuman, main character with a specific task, (2) a problem that is solved in a humorous or outrageous way, (3) exaggerated details that describe things larger than they really are, and (4) characters who use everyday language.
Many tall tales are based on actual people or on a composite of actual people.

  What is a Tall Tale?
A tall tale is a story about a larger-than-life character, either fictional or based on a real person who has exaggerated adventures and performs exaggerated feats of daring, strength, courage, and/or intelligence.
It is typical of the tall tale that everything in it is the subject of hyperbole, and in this characteristic, it bears relation to the “fish story” or “whopper,” in which a fisherman’s exploits are exaggerated for dramatic or humorous effect.
Tall tales also are similar to fish stories in that many of them were told about a certain occupation among practitioners of that occupation.

Tall Tales and Jack Tales: Literature and Writing Activities
Tall tales spread as a popular literary form in the United States, especially on the frontier, in the middle of the nineteenth century.
Traditional tall tale heroes are claimed by the residents of specific American places, but their physical abilities and adventures are so vast that they or their stories often traveled across the country.
Tall tales in which humans depict their heroes as larger than a bear or a mountain, as strong enough to chop firewood for every house in West Virginia during a freezing winter, reflect some very basic fears and desires about humans' relationships with nature and with each other.

 Questions & Answers: Tall tale
Sometime in the seventeenth century, tall started to mean something grandiloquent or high-flown, an obvious enough extension from the—by then—usual meaning.
It’s closely connected with tall order, something that is thought to be hard to achieve, and there were other phrases as well, such as tall time, meaning a long time, which Charles Dickens used.
I’ve also found this slightly earlier American one from the wonderfully titled “Gentle Hortense; or, the Maiden’s Leap” by Emma E Specht: “Edward came in soon after, telling tall tales of the gentilhomme, who had been so kind to him”.
