A tally stick is "a long wooden stick used as a receipt." When money was paid in, a stick was inscribed and marked with combinations of notches representing the sum of money paid, the size of the cut corresponding to the size of the sum.
The stick was then split in two, the larger piece (the stock) going to the payer, and the smaller piece being kept by the payee.

The tally signals selectively activate lights in both the camera viewfinder for the camera operator to become aware of when their particular camera is selected and in front of the camera so that talent being photographed will know which camera has been selected and is photographing the scene at that very moment.
The tally light system tells both the individual camera operators and any on-camera talent being photographed which camera is"on"or"live." The signals for the tally light feature are sent from the switcher to the cameras down a separate electrical wire contained within the multiple conductor camera cables.
Each tally input lead is coupled to a separate voltage output from the switcher, wherein each switcher output emits a tally signal voltage that corresponds to a particular camera being selected.

"When the tally was complete, the stick was cleft lengthwise by the maker of the tallies, nearly throughout the whole extent, in such a manner that both pieces retained a copy of the inscription, and one half of every notch cut at the pointed end.
No two sticks could be found so exactly similar, as to admit of being identically matched with each other, when split in the coarse manner of cutting tallies; and certainly no alteration of the particulars expressed by the notches and inscription could remain undiscovered when the two parts were again brought together.
The notches were of various sizes and shapes corresponding to the tallied amount: a 1.5-inch notch for 1000 pounds, a 1-inch notch for 100 pounds, a half-inch notch for 20 pounds, with smaller notches indicating pounds, shillings, and pence, down to a halfpenny, indicated by a pierced dot.

The tally system could (of course) be abused by the Exchequer selling tallies which they would not redeem, but kings soon learned not to renege on tallies, since the discount on future tallies would be increased and the Exchequer would be hit hard.
The story of the tally illustrates this point well: what began as a technology for record&endash;keeping soon went on to become the basis of a money market, and then went on to remain in use long after 'better' alternatives were available.
