The importance of the theme of due burial in the Iliad defines the achievement of the Sophoclean Antigone and Hecuba in Troades alike; Talthybius' sympathy, then, is not only a matter of feeling but of initiating one of the deepest enacted symbols of human fulfilment.
The prologue assumes the reality of Olympian gods who will smash the Greek fleet on the voyage home, and it is for embarkation on this fleet that the people of the play depart.
The presence of these gods is strongly felt in the inspired personage of Cassandra, in connection with whom the secular outlook of Talthybius appears strikingly limited, for all his humane feeling.

In one of the most moving scenes in all of literature, his grandson Astyanax, a young child and the only surviving heir to the Trojan throne, is taken from his mother Andromache's grieving embrace and thrown to his death from the highest wall of the city.
In fact, the only pity and decency presented among the Greeks is found in the Greek messenger Talthybius, who cleans the body of Astyanax and brings it to his grandmother Hecuba after Andromache's pleading to bury him is denied as she is taken away to her fate as a Greek slave.
In this play the Greeks do more than enslave women: they have already slain a young girl as a sacrifice to the ghost of Achilles and they take Astyanax, the son of Hector, out of the arms of his mother so that he can be thrown from the walls of Troy.

Andrew Long as the messenger Talthybius is the antiheroic counterpart to the brave Hecuba, which is not to say that like her he does not have a moment of understanding.
But Hecuba's realization that all hope is lost, that the gods will never save her is permanent; Talthybius's realization that he can feel pity, that he is no good at carrying out murder, is only temporary.
Just as in the opening she emphasized human guilt in the face of silly and ineffective gods, Akalaitis shines a spotlight on the faulty Talthybius's humanity.
