Talvin Singh (Matharu) (born in 1970 in Leytonstone, London, England) is a British DJ and tabla player, known for creating an innovative fusion of classical Indian music and drum n bass.
Talvin Singh is generally considered involved with an electronica sub genre called Asian Underground.
Singh grew up in Leytonstone and began playing the tabla, breakdancing and listening to punk rock as a child.

Talvin had his tabla placed on a waist-length contraption (which he could adjust for height) and he played standing up.
Talvin played very little tabla in the first few pieces and even then it was frenzied beating designed to fascinate the audience with the movement of his hands rather than building up a rhythm and taking it to a climax, as one would in a classical tabla piece.
The following solo pieces were amazing, with Talvin building up with slow, cyclic rhythms, increasing his pace gradually until you were spellbound by the speed with which his hands were moving.

Singh's innovative style became known as Tablatronic, and was prevalent in the selection of songs involved in the 1997 breakthrough album Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground.
While it was not until the fall of 1997 that Anokha was released, Singh had been creating a niche for himself on the British club circuit for a couple of years prior to its release.
Slowly, Singh's tabla begins to accompany the voiceover, which shifts into various musical segments, including a layering of various other drums, bird calls, rain sticks, keyboards, thunder, tamboura, xylophones and an assortment of vocals and voiceovers.

We flocked in our hundreds to see London-based Singh's second Untouched concert, at which we were to expect spiritual music in a definitively spiritual setting.
A video documentary (that wouldn't have been out of place on BBC2) projected above the stage explained what Singh had been up to in India, and what he considered to be his education in the drumming culture of that country's southern regions.
The video had been busy telling us that, as a drummer, Singh hadn't wanted to be obscured at the back of the stage while a band took the limelight, but when Ustaad Sultan Khan began to play sarang we saw that the focus of the event moved to him.

I had a Tamil roommate who was always listening to Tamil movie music/pop, and I got into it but wanted something more like a cross between that and the kind of thing I like to listen to.
I like Singh's "Jaan" on that disc, but her voice gets a little bit grating - I know it's not just the style, because I have plenty of Indian music like it, but it's her actual voice.

Listening to Talvin's compilation really does sound like you've gone "back to his", as in his place, watching him excitedly pull out crates of ridiculously obscure LPs.
We've known Talvin likes to support his fellow Indian musicians since he put out his own compilation, Anokha: Soundz of the Asian Underground, so the Eastern flavor of the album's no surprise.
I was surprised, however, by the tempo of the compilation.
