The rest of the Talysh live across the border in the Iranian province of Gilan, in a long strip of territory along the Caspian coast, from Astara to the Rasht area.
The Talysh are Muslim, primarily of the Shia branch.

The Talysh live in the southernmost tip of Azerbaijan, along the Iranian border, mainly in the district of Lenkoran, Astarin and partly in Lerik and Massallin.
One part of the Talysh of Azerbaijan lives in the mountains, where the climate is dry, the other part lives on the humid subtropical coastal lowlands, which as they extend north, gradually become the dry Mugani Steppe.
In the late 18th century, a Talysh Khanate was established which in 1812 (conclusively in 1828), together with the northern part of Azerbaijan, was annexed to Russia.

Talysh is classified as a Northwest Iranian language that is spoken by roughly 200.000 people both in northwestern Iran and southern Azerbajdzan.
The morphosyntax of Northern Talysh is characterized by a complicated split system which is based on the Northwest Iranian type of accusativity/ergativity dichotomy: It shows accusative features with present stem based transitive constructions, whereas past stem based construction tend towards an ergative behavior.
The present portrayal of Northern Talysh is based on the author's fieldwork and is both descriptive and explanatory: it concentrates on features of actance typology explaining the architecture of its 'Operating System' and the emergence of split structures from both a typological and a cognitive perspective.

Incidently, I was in Talysh with Samuel Karapetyan of the Research on Armenian Architecture (RAA) team and Tom de Waal, Caucaus Editor of the Institute of War & Peace Reporting (IWPR).
Few ends are deader than Talysh, a community of Armenians surrounded on two sides by troops guarding a ceasefire line at its most north-easterly point in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed Armenian-held territory that is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan.
Talysh was captured and recaptured during the Karabakh war; three-quarters of its 600 houses are still in ruins.

Talysh nouns have two cases; verbs use the same stem for the present and the past tenses, and have quite a large number of forms - 8 aspects and tenses, four moods and 2 voices.
The syntax is distinguished by a number ergative constructions with transitive verbs in the past tense sentences.
Talysh is quite close to some other minor dialects of the region: Harzani, Tati, etc.

This is a small seaside city near the southern border with Iran, with a population of 45.000, most of which are Iranian Talysh.
The local military have had their moments of fame: twice this century Lenkoran was the capital of self declared independent Talysh states.
The first time was in 1919 in the confusion after the end of WWI and the initial stages of the Russian civil war, the Talysh Mugam Socialist Republic was declared, it rejoined Azerbaijan a few months later.

This thesis looks at the identification of positive vernacular orientation in the Talysh community of the city of Sumgayit, Azerbaijan, for the purpose of gaining a greater understanding of its causes.
Positive vernacular orientation is shown to be weakest in third generation individuals born after 1991.
Talysh use in the home during an individual’s childhood; economic, social and circumstantial factors in an individual’s life; and ethnolinguistic identity are presented as influential in producing positive vernacular orientation in an individual’s sociolinguistic behaviour.

Lankaran, or Lenkoran, (Azeri: Lənkəran) is a small city in Azerbaijan, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, near the southern border with Iran, with a population of 48,400 (2002), at least half of which are Talysh.
Lankaran was for a long time the capital of the Talysh Khanate, which enjoyed variable degrees of independence throughout history.
