  Bold Type: Tama Janowitz
Tama Janowitz burst into the spotlight in 1986 with, Slaves of New York, a collection of offbeat, bitingly satirical short stories that shed light on Gotham City's denizens and social mores.
She was a "Guess who I saw at ____!"-level celebrity, and the press linked her--perhaps a bit too enthusiastically--to the "literary brat pack," consisting of Janowitz and writers Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney.
In this issue of Bold Type, read an interview with Tama Janowitz and an excerpt from A Certain Age.

With her stunning looks ("usually it would be impossible to find a man who, physically, was her equal"), Peyton has no trouble luring men to bed, but under pressure from her manic-depressive mother, she hastily marries an unsuspecting dentist for money and out of fear that no one else will deem her marriageable.
Janowitz's eye for the sordid detail is as merciless as ever, and she's in her element describing Peyton's squalid childhood home, her drug-addled and delusional mother, her increasingly dreary succession of affairs, and her nebbishy husband.
Janowitz built a following with Slaves of New York (1986), one of the defining books of the 1980s, and she also won acclaim for her recent novel A Certain Age (1999).

Amazon.ca: A Certain Age: Books: Tama Janowitz   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Janowitz tells us, "By high school she had realized that no matter what women filled their lives with, there was still no status for them apart from whoever-whatever they had married." No clue is given as to how Florence comes to this arresting conclusion, but the author chooses to make her pay for her callowness.
Although her writing is above average and her observations are acute, Tama Janowitz gives you nothing except increasing contempt for Florence as she throws away the advantages of modern American life to wallow in addiction and degradation.
A Certain Age is a novel that fits that famous line: "The book that fulfills the author's early promise." Tama Janowitz has, to state it even more simply, written her most accomplished work to date.

Tama Janowitz : Peyton Amberg : Book Review
Tama Janowitz’s stunning new novel, Peyton Amberg is a character study of a beautiful woman who believes that her looks and her body are all she has to offer to the world… and she willingly gives them.
Janowitz’s clever satire brings this phenomenon to the forefront, and I think I’m going to give this book as a gift to all my friends before their consultations with the plastic surgeon.
Tama Janowitz vaulted to literary stardom with the bestselling Slaves of New York become the "the Most Talked About Writer of the Years" (Women's Wear Daily).

Review: Peyton Amberg by Tama Janowitz | Review | Guardian Unlimited Books
Janowitz allows her heroine no mercy, as the girl with the mad, abusive mother, "hideous hippie hair sprouting from her head in various colours, like some terrible mutant dandelion", descends from the fantasy of happiness to the depths of degradation.
This is the fate of the American dream, the American beauty in pursuit of sexual pleasure, deceived as to her prospects in life, cheated of dignity.
Peyton is afflicted - as Ms Janowitz also seems to be, and no doubt Jane Austen would be were she to have the misfortune to be writing 200 years later - by the horrors of the flesh.

Janowitz gives us her unique lowdown on her 1990s conversion from Manhattan to Brooklyn, on observing the Twin Towers come down from her apartment roof, on hairless dogs and ferrets, babies, the outer boroughs, big-hair days and bad-hair days.
Since adopting Chinese babies isn't uncommon in the world of modern Manhattanites, it's not surprising when Janowitz describes the trip she and her husband took to Heifei to adopt.
Janowitz's description of her incompetence as a new mom has an almost Marx Brothers quality, as she details their baby fighting a diaper change 'like a wounded fox in a leg-hold trap.' Her essays on animals and pets are characteristically contrarian.

Tama Janowitz burst onto the literary scene in the 1980s with the publication of her bestselling story collection SLAVES OF NEW YORK, which deftly chronicled the insecurities and eccentricities of a colorful menagerie of city dwelling singles.
Her subsequent books have been similar send-ups of Manhattan life, but with PEYTON AMBERG, Janowitz charts a new course as she turns her acerbic eye on married life and its malcontents.
PEYTON AMBERG is the MADAME BOVARY of our time: a modern-day domestic drama of longing, regret, resentment, and dreams unfulfilled.

We discussed her book and books in general, we talked about ferrets and Charlton Heston, we dissected the early-'80s club-and-cocaine scene.
What struck me almost as much as her answers to my questions were her questions to me: no interview rookie, Tama seemed happy to turn the focus away from herself.
On that note we discussed my parents, my career, my writing, and from time to time I found myself needing to lob the conversational ball back into her court.
