Book News - In Thickets of Memory - Fumi Saito
There is a special section in In Thickets of Memory where Kirkup takes pains to explain his translation in collaboration with Tamaki.
The answer is this substantial anthology of bilingual tanka, the product of six years of hard work by someone who understands Japanese culture and literature very well, James Kirkup, and his Japanese poet friend, Makoto Tamaki.
I know James Kirkup, and I have enjoyed his translations of, and writings on haiku.

 Japan Hero
Saito’s single the haunting “Shiroi Hono” [White Flame] was used as the theme song for Season One of “Sukeban Deka”.
The lyrics were written for her by another 80’s J-Pop icon, singer-song writer Tamaki Koji, lead member of the then popular group Anzenchitai.

BBC NEWS Programmes Correspondent Japan: The Missing Million
Japan's leading hikikomori psychiatrist, Dr Tamaki Saito, believes the cause of the problem lies within Japanese history and society.
The boy in the kitchen suffers from a social disorder known in Japan as hikikomori, which means to withdraw from society.
The toilet is adjacent to the kitchen, but he only baths once every six months.

Delphiki: You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.
On the one million hikikomori— I found that that estimate actually came originally from Doctor Saito Tamaki, the man who coined the word ‘hikikomori’ and subsequently published a dozen books on the subject since the mid 1990s.
I would say that 80% of the hikikomori at the rehab center where I worked were re-socialized and functional within six months to one year of admittance.
Your analysis of the causes and behavior patterns of hikikomori, due in part to Japanese cultural influences, are pretty accurate based upon my own ten months of field research in Japan on this topic.
