The Berber language known as Tamazight is spoken in northern Africa (Morocco and Algeria).
It seems that the oral tradition of Tamazight is guaranteed to the extent that the majority of parents use it to talk to their children.
The absence of an institutional and official presence, of the means of social reproduction of the language (education, mass media) and the lack of a solid network of local cultural associations that could use Tamazight and bolster its position within the community mean that its survival is in jeopardy.

Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Tamazight, a Berber variety spoken in central Morocco, has two different strategies to express sentential negation similar in this respect to other Berber dialects reported in Chaker (1996), Nait-Zerrad (1994) among others.
Tamazight, Taqbaylit, Chaoui and Tarifit in this respect are similar to French, which employs two negation elements ne and pas.
I analyze Berber negative element Neg1 as a Neg head (Tamazight ur for example) and Neg2 as a specifier of NegP (the case of sha for example).

The objective of the government's declaration if far from implying its genuine interest in the future of Tamazight:  It was obviously only a ploy to stop Tamazight from becoming a regional issue because its discrimination against Tamazight and Imazighen would attract the attention of the international community.
