Since Tambacounda was a major train stop it became a djembe "proving ground".

The Region predominates between the 700 and 1500 mm isohyets and is centered on the 900 to 1200 mm isohyets.
To the east, including much of the Tambacounda Region, human pressure is less intense, and the vegetation formations approximate the climax vegetation (savanna woodlands and dry woodlands) that once blanketed the Sudanian Region.
This is the region of the semi-evergreen dense forest; its extent has been reduced to a few remnant communities by widespread deforestation for the cultivation of rice, manioc and peanuts.

In the regions of eastern Saint-Louis, Matam, Tambacounda, and Kolda, where the practice was most prevalent, it was estimated that 50 percent of girls undergo FGM, with the estimated rate in Kolda as high as 88 percent.
In November 2001, in Velingara, Kolda region, a mother of two and an FGM practitioner were arrested for the October excision of the mother's two daughters; trials for the two women were pending at year's end.
In most of the country, ethnic and regional tensions have not contributed significantly to human rights abuses, and opposition to the Government generally has taken the form of nonviolent political parties that have not had readily identifiable ethnic or regional bases.

The events will be held on October 20-21, 2001 in the villages of Tombronkoto (Department of Kedougou, Region of Tambacounda) and Malem Niani (Department of Tambacounda, Region of Tambacounda).
Tambacounda is one of the poorest and most traditional regions of Senegal.

The events of last weekend are even more remarkable in that the region of Tambacounda is one of the most conservative and traditional areas of the country.
It was in this region that 120 girls were cut in protest (with the same knife) on the morning following the vote to outlaw FGC in Senegal in January 1999.
Traditional singers and dancers from the various ethnic groups of the region performed for the guests and participants presented short dramas on the dangers of FGC and early marriage.

The project intervention area is the municipality of Kédougou; including all of the districts and Rural Communities (RCs) of the department of Kédougou, and all the RCs of the district of Missirah (department of Tambacounda).

The event is the latest in a series of declarations to promote human rights and positive social change at the grassroots level, bringing to 1,527 the number of villages in Senegal that have abandoned FGC since 1997.
But for one of the poorest regions in Senegal where FGC affects approximately 88% of all women, these 160 communities will serve as models of what can be accomplished by putting development in the hands of the people themselves.
Their initiative to abandon harmful traditional practices comes as a direct result of a basic education program implemented by the NGO Tostan in collaboration with Unicef and the Government of Senegal over the past three years.

The confirmation of a single case of yellow fever in Tambacounda last month, some 500 km east of the capital Dakar, is officially an epidemic according to World Health Organisaton (WHO) classifications.
“A fatal case of yellow fever was confirmed on 30 September in the Tambacounda region and we launched a vaccination drive the following Tuesday to immunise all the population living in the surrounding health districts,” Pape Coumba Faye, the Director of Preventive Medicine at the Senegalese Health Ministry told IRIN on Tuesday.
At the end of August WHO confirmed 10 cases of yellow fever, including five deaths, in the densely forested region of Fouta Djalon, south-eastern Guinea.

As of 20 November, the Ministry of Health has confirmed 57 cases and 10 deaths of yellow fever (see previous report).
The immunization campaigns in Diourbel region have achieved coverage rates of 94-99% (Touba = 99%) and no cases have been confirmed in this region since 24 October.
The date of onset of illness for the 2 most recent confirmed cases was 11 November and 9 November and these cases were detected in Thies and Dakar region.

Senegalese officials officially launched the new plan on Friday in the regional capital Tambacounda, an area where the practice is pervasive.
The first prosecution of FGM performers in Senegal was conducted two years ago in Tambacounda, but have since then been few in number.
The campaign was opened successfully by the public announcement of some 101 villages in the Tambacounda region, they would abandon the practice.
