  There's a Chair in there - Music - Entertainment - smh.com.au
Tambalane is a songwriting collaboration between Gillies and young troubadour Wesley Carr, with the late addition of bass player Greg Royal and keyboard player Gerard Masters.
Tambalane is particularly rewarding for Gillies, who co-wrote on Silverchair's first two records but played more of a support role during Johns's introspective songwriting on Neon Ballroom and Diorama.
Tambalane has also given Gillies the chance to expose the talents of a songwriter who, in his mind, has forever been on the verge of something bigger than what Sydney's acoustic scene could provide.

For Gillies, his new project, Tambalane (a name devised from the wine, Tamburlaine) not only enables him to continue his craft while Silverchair lies dormant, it also gives him the chance to dust off his songwriting skills and step out from behind the drum kit.
As Tambalane’s main songwriter, Carr admits a lot of the bands lyrics aren’t what you’d call deep, though he declares the album is based more around sound and melody than meaning of words.
Tambalane are touring in October and will be joined by new members’ remove apostrophe bass player, Greg Royal and keyboard player, Gerard Masters.

 Playing musical chairs - Music - Entertainment - theage.com.au
Circumstance and prior exploits couldn't be further apart for the pair, but Gillies, Silverchair's powerhouse drummer, and Carr, an unknown acoustic singer-songwriter, have become firm friends and musical cohorts through their band Tambalane, a four-piece - completed by bassist Greg Royal and keyboardist Gerard Masters - that has just released a self-titled debut album.
Deliberately eclectic, Tambalane touches on baroque pop and bar band RandB, but it works best as an easygoing evocation of '70s stadium rock, particularly on the radio-friendly cuts Free and Back To You.
Carr once had a girlfriend dump him when he was 14 because he wasn't allowed to accompany her to a Big Day Out to see Silverchair.

Tambalane’s debut record is like a mixed bag of lollies - some you’ll relish while others will leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Tambalane gel a lot better with their folky tracks, or slower tracks that don't follow the usual pop formula.
Tambalane's debut slides brilliantly between the decades where The Beatles, Queen, Travis, and The Verve were in vogue, while still managing to create their own style with an Australian flavour.

Tambalane were conceived after a couple of bottles of wine - one troubadour and the drummer from one of Australia’s most successful rock bands.
The biography says that you guys actually got your name from the winery that produced the wine you were drinking at the time of the bands conception, is that true and what was the real name?
It was Tambalane, but it was spelt Tamburlaine, we just went with more how it was said and being rock musicians our spelling’s not the best.

With a folk-inspired background on Carr's side, and of course Gillies' drumming connection to Silverchair, the two seem like an odd coupling.
But Tambalane provides him with a creative outlet, he finds it therapeutic in other ways.

The plush surrounds of the renovated Newtown RSL served as an apt venue for two exceedingly tight bands preoccupied with constructing the perfect pop melody.
There's nothing pub-rock-like to either End of Fashion or Tambalane and indeed tonight was for those that like their rock polished to a high sheen.
Drawing from the same perfect melody aesthetic, Tambalane comes off as a less beguiling End of Fashion with sugar-coated lyrics and saccharine melodies sweetened to the point of superfluidity.
