Mission and Dialogue: 50 Years After Tambaram
The disagreements at Tambaram focused to a large extent on the appropriateness of a Christian "promise and fulfillment" approach to other religions.
One participant remarked that in past discussions, from Tambaram on, it was often the case that mission people put the dialogue people on the defensive, accusing them of undercutting evangelism, and compromising New Testament faith.
Yet the participants in Tambaram 1988 may have played some part in broadening the discussion of that tension, and in helping the church to understand that mission and dialogue are parts of one issue, not two isolated and alternate or opposing special interests.

It was believed till recently that the earliest stone inscriptions in the Tamil language belonged to the early seventh century A.D., the time of the Pallava monarch Mahendra I. Some of his inscriptions written in the Grantha script can be seen at Pallavaram in the cave temple now used as a Muslim place of worship.
Tambaram is referred to here as Taampuram or perhaps, it should be read as Taamapuram or even Dharmapuram, because these three different forms would be written in precisely the same way in the ancient Chola Tamil Script.
The inscription ends with the phrase Sri Maheshvarar Rakshai indicating that the endowment was associated with the Maheswaras, or the devotees of Siva.

Ecumenical Dictionary entry on Interfaith Dialogue
Thus, although the Tambaram report leaned heavily towards Kraemer’s views, it acknowledged that “Christians are not agreed” on the revelatory character of other religious traditions and identified this as “a matter urgently demanding thought and united study” within the ecumenical movement.
A WCC conference in Kandy, Sri Lanka, in 1967, proved to be a landmark both as the beginning of serious interest in interfaith dialogue as such in the WCC, and as the first involvement in the ecumenical discussion of the Vatican Secretariat for Non-Christians.
Fears were expressed that dialogue would lead to the kind of syncretism* against which the 1928 Jerusalem meeting warned, or that it would compromise faith in the uniqueness and finality of the revelation in Christ, or that it would threaten mission seen as fundamental to the being of the church itself.
