Topic: Tamerlano

  Georg Friedrich Händel: Tamerlano
Handel began the composition of Tamerlano, one of the supreme masterpieces of Baroque opera seria, on 3rd July 1724.
The first reason for revision was a change in the cast: the role of Irene was originally conceived for a soprano, then much of it had to be rewritten for the contralto Anna Dotti, who sang it in the first performance.
As part of this shortening process Handel also cut a duet for Tamerlano and Irene ("Vedrò ch'un dì") which originally followed the recitative "Signor, fra tante cure" in Act III Scene 8; it is printed as Appendix (17) in the HHA score, and is given here on pp.

Classical Net Review - Vivaldi - Bajazet
Typical of its time, this is one of the operas with an "A loves B loves C, etc." plot, except the romantic entanglements take place against the backdrop of the conflict between Tamerlano (Tamerlane, literally "the lame lord"), ruler of the Tartars, and Bajazet (here, pronounced "Ba-zha-zette"), ruler of the Turks.
Tamerlano rewards Irene with a new promise of marriage, and orders Asteria, Bajazet, and Andronico to be taken away.
This was not at all unusual for the era, and it had a symbolic purpose, as Vivaldi used music by the composers in the Neapolitan style for arias assigned to the "invaders" – Tamerlano, Andronico, and Irene.

classical music - andante - handel's tamerlano, on cd and dvd
Tamerlano is one of Handel's most successful musical dramas, with a number of distinguishing characteristics: it eschews special stage effects and most lavish vocal display, and it features a starring role for a tenor, common in the oratorios but not at all characteristic of Handel's operas.
The story concerns the Tatar conqueror Tamerlano (Tamerlane, Tamburlaine, etc.), a favorite antagonist of early modern writers and composers, who has overcome the Ottoman sultan Bajazet (Bayezid) and seeks to marry his daughter Asteria, despite being betrothed to Irene, the Princess of Trebizond, whom he has never met.

MUSIC REVIEW;Florid Style for a Tartar King - New York Times
"Tamerlano," composed in 1724 to a libretto adapted by Nicola Haym from an original by Agostino Piovene, is typically Baroque in its combination of political intrigue with romance gone awry.
Tamerlano, the 15th-century Tartar king, has defeated Bajazet's Turkish army, and although Bajazet's daughter, Asteria, is betrothed to Andronico, a Greek general and Tamerlano's ally, Tamerlano decides to marry her himself.
Yuri Hasegawa, a soprano, was a superbly fiery Asteria, and Tara Venditti, a mezzo-soprano, balanced imperiousness with at least a hint of compassion in her portrayal of Tamerlano.

Tamerlano premiered on 31 October, and this was certainly not a chance date.
Handel revived Tamerlano once in 1731, making several major changes - he added one aria, but especially cut a great deal of the recitatives, which are already the most extensive in all of Handel’s operas.

Tamerlano is usually considered as one of Handel’s masterworks composed for the Royal Academy of Music, and was created in 1724, only a few months after Giulio Cesare in Egitto and before Rodelinda, regina de’Longobardi.

This new recording by Trevor Pinnock is as musically and dramatically convincing as any previous version, although an initially harsh verdict is that it is a wasted opportunity due its minimal advance of our understanding of the opera as Handel intended it to be heard.

WHere this recording suffers is from having a light-weight Mezzo as Tamerlano - Monica Bacelli is not really up to the florid coloratura of Handel's writing (Ah dispetto comes to mind), nor does she have the moral authority or nastiness of the tyrant which is needed here.
Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz is also substandard as Asteria, but her duet with Andronico is one of the highlights of the CD set.
