Stone Cold Pimpin': Tamio Okuda - E
When Okuda is in top form, he's one of the best rock musicians out there, writing pop-rock in the Beatles/Stones tradition.
Okuda manages to coax something new out of the standard rock palette, with sneaky inclusions of marimba, female backing vocals (a first!), and some grungy Hammond (or some sort) organ playing.
Check out the one called "matatabi.mov" as Tamio sings a medley of his songs in under two minutes with a selection of props.

 Okuda Tamio
With Tamio putting so much of his energy into Puffy though, one might expect his solo career to be put on the backburner, however in 1998 he released one of his strongest albums to date, "Matatabi".
Tamio however, with his casual style and easy-going attitude goes against the idol type which has been the staple of Japanese pop since the seventies.
Tamio's collaboration with Abe seems pretty natural to me. He joined Unicorn a bit later than the rest and was more like-minded with Tamio than the others in the group.

Nippop | Tamio Okuda | Profile
Okuda was a member of midranking rock band Unicorn until the band broke up in 1993, and then went on to achieve tremendous success by working as the producer of female pop duo Puffy.
Okuda’s deep knowledge of and respect for classic pop, especially the Beatles, was apparent on Puffy singles such as “Circuit no Musume,” a bright, infectious tune with lots of catchy hooks which he both wrote and produced.
In 1992 Okuda released his first solo single, Yasumi (Holiday), and in 1994 he released his first solo album, 29 (i.e., his age at the time), which featured great tunes such as "Musuko", an unashamedly sentimental song about a father’s love for his son.

While Tamio was the frontman of the band, Kazushi (better known by his nickname "Ebi"), and later on Abe shared the stage with Tamio as the backing vocals.
Tamio is profoundly erudite in just about every style of music since the emergence of popular music so he is able to experiment heavily with the entire musical spectrum in every song he writes.
Tamio's solo career is a juggernaut showing no sights of slowing, which you can read all about on my Okuda Tamio page.

In 1996, Tamio Okuda co-wrote a song with Yosui Inoue, once called the Bob Dylan of Japan, for an unknown girl group he was producing called Puffy.
The song was "Ajia no Junshin," and it went on to be one of that year's biggest hits on the Japanese charts and propelled Puffy into overnight success.
A year later, whether because of the success or despite it, Okuda and Inoue released a full album of songs they had written together (at a mountain temple retreat, so went the publicity).

Puffy (comprising Yumi Yoshimura and Ami Onuki) debuted in 1996 with the single “Asia No Junshin (Pure Heart of Asia)", which sold more than 1 million copies.
The duo specialize in an upbeat pop pastiche with songs like songs like “Circuit no Musume” (Circuit Girl) and “Korega Watashino Ikirumichi” (This Is My Way of Living) that are unashamedly retro in inspiration, recorded under the guiding hands of producers such as artist/artist_id-103/artist_name-tamio_okuda/">Tamio Okuda and Jellyfish’s Andy Sturmer.
Puffy’s unassuming but carefully calculated “anti-idol idol” image helped them quickly become media darlings, as they appeared in TV commercials, magazine print ads, and their own regular TV variety show.
