Tamirat, 45, a leading guerrilla leader in the movement that toppled the Mengistu Haile Mariam regime in May 1991, was Tuesday handed an 18-year prison sentence and a fine of 15,000 birr (about 1,875 US dollars) after being found guilty on three counts of corruption and gross abuse of power.
After Tamirat's heavy sentence, all eyes are now focused on the declared intention by one of the regional states this week that it intends to prosecute the state's Supreme Court judge and several other supreme and high court judges already dismissed from office for alleged corruption and abuse of office.
Tamirat Layne, former deputy prime minister and defense minister, was Tuesday sentenced by the Federal Supreme Court to 18 years' imprisonment from the date of his arrest on charges of corruption.

The charges, that Tamirat allowed illegal auctions to be carried out and taken 16 million US dollars from Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi under the pretext of paying the debt of the Ethiopian Government, have been supported by authentic evidences, the court said.
The court has also convicted Tamirat of misappropriating the money that was obtained from the sale of illegally exported coffee under his instructions, which also incurred cost on other government offices to pay the debt.
Tamirat was also held accountable for ordering the relatively "backward states" to sign a 67 million Birr agreement for the purchase of building materials from a company called "PMIS" without the appropriate proforma invoice, it said.

Some are More Equal than Others
The humiliating way in which the Prime Minister told the tale of Tamirat's "progressive" sins of corruption and other equally deadly misdemeanors that are in conflict with the high office occupied by the plaintiff were not the only surprises in waiting for the expectant public.
The most astonishing - and even suicidal - move  by Tamirat himself that occurred with the Prime Minister's devastating attack on his longtime ally was followed by a self-destructive confession by Tamirat himself, who willingly corroborated the Prime Minister's accusation, with even more imagery and metaphorical language.
Despite all this, the arrest of Tamirat has raised speculations that the real reason for his incarceration may be something larger than corruption and concerning disagreements he created with his life-long allies regarding key political issues.
