Tammany Hall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tammany Hall was the name given to the Democratic Party political machine that dominated New York City politics from the mayoral victory of Fernando Wood in 1854 through the election of Fiorello LaGuardia in 1934.
The Tammany Society of New York City was founded in 1786 as a patriotic fraternal organization whose primary activities were social, with an initial movement within the society to improve the image of Native Americans.
However, Tammany was consistently able to survive and, indeed, prosper in spite of opposition and continued to dominate New York politics and by extenstion the politics of the country because New York was then the largest state in the union into the 1930s.

Almost from the beginning Tammany has been actively engaged in politics, being part of, and during the greater period of its existence actually representing in New York City, the Democratic party, though always subordinating the interests of the party as a whole to its own selfish interests.
The most conspicuous overthrows of Tammany since the days of Tweed were in 1894, in 1901, when practically the whole reform ticket from mayor to alderman was elected, and in 1909 when the mayor (not a member of Tammany) was the only Tammany nominee on the general ticket elected.
The power of Tammany Hall is the natural result of the well-regulated machine which it has built up throughout the city, directed by an omnipotent boss.

Lalor, Cyclopaedia of Political Science, V.3, Entry 239, TAMMANY HALL: Library of Economics and Liberty
The second period of "Tammany" may be considered as extending from the election of C. Lawrence as mayor, in 1834, to the crushing defeat of Tammany Hall by Mozart Hall in the election of Fernando Wood, in 1859.
In the second period, when the Tammany society had been definitely succeeded by the more popular general committee, Tammany Hall was dominant in New York city because it contained the ablest politicians in a city narrowly divided between the whig and democratic voters.
The Tammany society, under its new sachems, excluded his general committee, and Wood seceded to Mozart Hall and was elected mayor in 1859 over the Tammany candidate, W. Havemeyer.

The society was a secret organization, divided into tribes, with sachems (the most important being the Grand Sachem) as the chief officials, a sagamore, or master of ceremonies, and a winskinskie, or door-keeper, and with a ritual of supposedly Indian character.
