 Opposition to mining still strong in Tampakan
The diocese of Marbel is saddened by the change of heart of the B’laan communities by allowing Tampakan Mining Resources Corp. (TMRC) to conduct mineral exploratory activities in the area, but the diocese remains steadfast in its advocacy and education in opposing the ill-effects of mining to the environment and the community.
Besides, Tampakan is considered a watershed area and is the headwater source of five major rivers in the province of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.
Tampakan, South Cotabato -- Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez of the Diocese of Marbel claimed faith is the reason why the Church is taking a critical stance against large-scale mining.

He also lauded the company for spending millions of pesos for the development of communities in the affected area even as the firm is not yet in full operation.

KORONADAL CITY -- Mining activities in the hinterland of Tampakan, South Cotabato may worsen soil instability as confirmed no less by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
MGB's findings prompted the local Catholic Church to renew its call for the government to stop Sagittarius Mines Inc from pursuing its copper and gold venture straddling the towns of Tampakan in South Cotabato, Columbio in Sultan Kudarat and Kiblawan in Davao del Sur.
The firm said it is already aware of the cracks and that it has sent its own team of geologists to assess the situation.

In October 2003, at least 100 residents of a far-flung village in Polomolok town, South Cotabato complained of various illnesses that were allegedly brought about by the presence in their area of the Bt corn, a variety designed to repel corn borers without the use of pesticides.
Results, however, of the tests conducted on the affected villagers have yet to be released but unconfirmed reports circulating here over the weekend said that samples taken by a foreign mission show that Bt toxins were allegedly found on the specimens of those tested.

On board more than two dozens trucks, jeepneys, buses and private cars, protesters from South Cotabato gathered in the capital city of Koronadal in the morning and passed through Tampakan town.
The caravan, however, was prevented from passing by the office of SMI in downtown Tampakan as all roads leading to it were blocked by heavily armed policemen.

Catholic bishops in Central Mindanao are gearing to fight the mining operation of an Australian-owned firm in Tampakan, South Cotabato.
The bishops had earlier led some 8,000 protesters who staged a rally in front of the SMI office in Tampakan town during the Earth Day celebration to oppose SMI’s mining operations and called for the repeal of the Mining Act of 1995.
Tampakan Mayor Claudius Barroso, however, played down the protest actions, saying the protesters were not from his town but from other areas which are not covered by the SMI’s proposed mining sites.

A SURVEY reportedly commissioned by the defunct Western Mining Corporation (WMC) shortly before it abandoned its mining exploration in Tampakan, South Cotabato revealed that majority of the respondents opposed the mining operations in the boundaries of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Davao del Sur and Sarangani.
The survey revealed two out of three respondents, or 67 per cent, in General Santos, Digos in Davao del Sur, Koronadal in South Cotabato and Tampakan also in South Cotabato expressed views about the negative impact of the mining operation in the environment.
Efforts to get reactions from former WMC officials who are now connected with the Tampakan Mineral Resources Corporation (TMRC) proved fruitless as they denied any knowledge of the said survey.
