The "Battle of Tampico" was fought November 15, 1835, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
In October 1835, an expedition was raised in New Orleans for the purpose of supporting Federalist opposition thought to be present in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
The expedition arrived at Tampico and attempted to capture that important port city.

Counting on the support of the liberals known to be among the members of the garrison at Tampico, Mexía and his 150 "efficient emigrants" left New Orleans on November 6, 1835, on the schooner Mary Jane.
Thirty-one prisoners were left at Tampico; of these, three died of wounds; the others were tried by court martial and shot on December 14.

It was gotten up under the auspices of General Mexia, one of the republican officers in Mexico, who abandoned Santa Anna when the latter declared for the centralists.
Mexia advised the expedition, and declared the capture of Tampico the most fatal blow that could be given to the operations of Santa Anna against Texas.
The vessel proceeded on her voyage until the 12th, when it was made known to those not in the secret that there was on board the craft a general with his staff, whose design was to act in concert with the Texans, and he desired them to join him.

Under the command of Lt. William P. Griffin, Tampico participated in the attack on Vera Cruz and the fortress castle of San Juan d'Ulloa in March 1847.
She served in the inshore covering force and fired on what she determined to be Mexican cavalry massing behind the sand dunes along the shore at Vera Cruz.
With the successful conclusion of the investment of Vera Cruz, Tampico subsequently took part in the operations against the town of Alvarado.

Houston visited the troops in the Goliad area and convinced many that the expedition was ill conceived.
In November, a Mexican general who supported the Federalist cause (José Antonio Mexía) organized an expedition in New Orleans and led it to Tampico to help anti-Centralist forces thought to be operating in and around this important port city.
He expedition was a disastrous failure—the Centralists easily defeated him and captured some of his men.
