 History of the Tampon
Tampons come in various sizes, which are related to their absorbency ratings and packaging.
Tampons are also sold without applicators; these are simply unwrapped and pushed into the vagina with the fingers.
Tampons, their applicators, and wrappings are used once and then either flushed down a toilet, or disposed of in trash.

FDA regulates tampons as medical devices, and "we ensure that tampon design and materials are safe through a solid, scientifically valid premarket review process," says Colin Pollard, chief of FDA's obstetrics and gynecology devices branch.
Tampon manufacturers conduct a battery of safety studies, and tampons must pass through FDA review and clearance before they can be marketed.
He adds that all tampon manufacturers, including those introducing new materials, report to FDA on absorbency, as well as on the safety of all components of a tampon, including the cover, string and applicator, and on the chemical composition of any fragrances and color additives.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Asbestos in Tampons
Rayon contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly absorbent substance and therefore when fibers from the tampons are left behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground for the dioxin, and stays in a lot longer than it would with just cotton tampons.
Use tampons that are made from 100% cotton, and that are unbleached.
Though moving to all-cotton unbleached tampons will eliminate any possibility of contact with dioxins from that source, there's danger from another direction: conventionally-grown cotton is one of the most pesticide-intensive crops in commercial agriculture.

Tests provided to the FDA by the big tampon manufactures claim that the dioxin levels in tampons range from undetectable to a mere 1 part in 3 trillion, much lower levels than what one receives through daily, environmental exposure.
Technically, this is true, but in practice, even industry spokesmen admit that dioxins can enter tampons through ingredients such as cotton and rayon, which are exposed to pollutants throughout their life cycles.
