Tampopo begins when two truck drivers, one young and one experienced, happen onto a decrepit roadside fast food stop selling ramen (additional info and facts about ramen).
The business is not doing too well, and after getting involved in a fight, the heroes decide to help the young lady owner Tampopo to turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle soup making".

The rest of the film is a delicious, hilarious platter of food-related vignettes, as well as Tampopo's efforts to reach noodle nirvana -- which involves recipe-stealing, countless kitchen maneuvers, confrontations with rival dough boilers and, at one point, a meeting with a group of gourmet hobos expert in the garbage of the best restaurants.
Just about everything in "Tampopo" bears mentioning, from the husband who temporarily brings his dead wife back to life by ordering her to make dinner, to the pseudo-sage who imparts the Zen of soup-eating: It involves looking lovingly at the pork slices while you slurp noisily on the noodles.

Tampopo was the second feature directed by Juzo Itami, a former actor whose eclectic credits in that field include everything from the made-in-Spain Samuel Bronston epic 55 Days at Peking (1963) to Koji Wakamatsu's subversive The Notorious Concubines (1969) and Yoshimitsu Morita's The Family Game (1983).
Tampopo isn't quite as good, but much like a great bowl of ramen, is highly satisfying.

A comedy through and through, "Tampopo" presents characters that are both believable, compassionate and hilarious at the same time.
Their inclusion could come off as initially confusing to some viewers, as they have no immediate connection to the films main cast, but in the end they are the extra spices added that round out "Tampopo"s unique flavor and style.
"Tampopo" should be watched by everyone at least once, if not for its fascinating concept then for the brilliant execution.

Tampopo's nonpareil scenes of bon vivant vagabonds sitting around an open campfire, critiquing the gastronomic merits of the table scraps they've purloined from the dumpsters of gourmet restaurants, are at once both boldly hilarious and touchingly sardonic.
Alas, the comedic genius of the ill-fated Itami was lost to the world the day he leapt to his death from the eighth floor of his office building over tabloid allegations that he was having an affair.

The film’s playful attitude conveys a love for movies in general (we are clued into this with the opening scene featuring the gangster and his mistress sitting down to a movie with a full dinner), making its parodies feel more like a series of homages, albeit ones with a nod and a wink.
Tampopo’s quest is in some ways the flipside of the characters’ quests: her desire is to provide this experience to others.
In this way she could be taken as a stand in for director, Juzo Itami (who also wrote the script and co-produced), who seems to have a similar desire to convey a love of food and film to his audience.

The gusto with which the characters approach food is both hilarious in its earnestness – in one very funny scene near the beginning of the film, an old noodle master gives his eager young protégé a painstakingly detailed tutorial on the proper method for enjoying noodle soup – and admirable as well.

This plot is structured much like a western: they fight to protect the lady and her son; Goro even wears a cowboy hat at all times (he takes it off temporarily to take a bath).
Goro takes Tampopo’s cause in the bar, and initially does well fighting four thugs at a time, but eventually they wear him out.
From here, Tampopo discovers that her noodles are not up to snuff, and Goro promises to help her improve her technique.

Dizzyingly hilarious, Tampopo is the ultimate slurp-'em-up; probably the greatest (and least seen) comedy to ever come out of Japan.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Famed Japanese director Juzo Itami, maker of films such as "Tampopo" and "Ososhiki" (The Funeral), died on Saturday after committing suicide, a police spokesman said.
The spokesman told Reuters that Itami, 64, was found badly injured on a street outside his office at 6:40 p.m.
The film is loosely based on the Japanese doomsday cult, Aum Shinrikyo, whose members are on trial for the March 1995 sarin nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subways that left 11 people dead and thousands injured.
