The first thing you can do is close country correctional centres, particularly the similar one which we have built around the state, such as Ivanhoe and Brewarrina.
You can close them down but we believe that it is good to have these correction centres spread around the state at places like Tamworth and Cooma, because inmates can be appropriated close to their families and friends.

Don Harwin asked me a question about the current status of the Wellington correctional centre and I thought I cleared up misconceptions which existed in the minds of Opposition members at that time relating to the Government's commitment to the construction of that facility.
For example, in Tamworth there are 30 additional beds and we have reopened Cooma with 120 beds.
First, its Minister for Corrective Services went to the then Premier and asked for the reopening of Katingal; that was its first strategy.

Mr PETER DRAPER (Tamworth) [6.06 p.m.]: I highlight the contribution to Aboriginal communities in north-west New South Wales of Kamilaroi elders Joe and Pearl Trindall.
I visited the Tamworth Correctional Centre last year with the New South Wales Minister for Justice and the Trindalls were in the visiting room offering support and cultural guidance, regardless of family ties, to Aboriginal inmates.
Joe was instrumental in establishing the Kamilaroi Aboriginal Legal Service in Tamworth, for which he received an acknowledgement at the inaugural New South Wales Justice awards at Parliament House.

But, Corrective Services Minister Bob Debus said the system was coping with increased prisoner numbers, with 518 new officers recruited since January 1999 and new accommodation being built.
