Tamyra Gray - Biography - AOL Music
Praised as much for her wide vocal range and passionate delivery as she was for her elegant style, Tamyra Gray was seen by many as the singer who, in a perfect world, should have won the first edition of American Idol.
While in elementary school, her chorus teacher taught Gray the basics of singing, which was the only formal training that she received.
Gray's parents encouraged her interest in music and performing, which was reflected in her wide musical tastes (Gray is a fan of Nikka Costa, Prince, and Aerosmith, as well as Persian and Vietnamese music) and her curiosity about all aspects of the music industry.

Tower Records - The Dreamer - Tamyra Gray
When Tamyra Gray was voted off AMERICAN IDOL early in its initial season (just as the phenomenon of the TV talent show was just beginning to take shape), it sparked the first of many controversies for the series.
Gray's talent was evident from early on in the contest, but fate can be fickle and unpredictable, particularly when controlled by television viewers.
Gray offers testimonial from the outset with the 1970s-Motown-infused "Star," but swiftly slows it down with the lush, horn-laden "Legend" and the Aretha Franklin-channeling ballad, "Raindrops Will Fall." Gray writes or co-writes almost all of the songs on her debut, and it's impressive that the record rarely missteps while rolling tempos back and forth.
