Tan Dun (譚盾 born August 18, 1957) is best known as the Grammy and Oscar award winning composer for the soundtrack of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.
Tan Dun was born in Simao, in the Hunan province of China.
In 2000 Dun, along with Sofia Gubaidulina, Osvaldo Golijov, and Wolfgang Rihm, was commissioned by the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart project to write a piece for the Passion 2000 project in commemoration of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Dun is not necessarily altering Hero for that specific purpose, but the more warlike nature of this second score causes the brass and percussion to be more recognizable than the dominant string material typically inherent in Dun's writing.
Dun is extremely loyal to his title theme, which may, in the end, be the most pronounced weakness of this score (as well as the previous one), and if the romanticism of this theme in all of its variants does not touch your soul, then you could in for a very long listen.
But Dun does offer the passages of war dedicated to his huge armies, and in cues such as "Warriors" and "At the Emperor's Palace," the KODO Drummers are paired with magnificent single-note blasts of brass, and the fight sequences predictably rely heavily on block-busting and stick-tapping percussion to maintain their rhythmic steam.

This is, after all, a composer who has written music for water and stones, and he exhibits an almost childlike delight in the sensuous appeal of sounds here, in the overlay of traditional Chinese instruments such as pipa with synth beats, cross rhythms, and a panoply of percussion.
However tempting it might be to label Tan's project as "crossover," it displays a depth and artistic integrity not usually associated with the term.
The work is a collage of various individual and seemingly disparate elements of West and East, ritual and sensual, ancient and modern, only that Tan displays them with a sense of assimilation at times, and antithesis at others.
