Tan Kah Kee (Traditional Chinese: 陳嘉庚; Simplified Chinese: 陈嘉庚; pinyin: Chén Jiāgēng, Hokkien: Tân Kah-kiⁿ) (October 21, 1874 - August 12, 1961) was a prominent businessman, community leader, and philanthropist in colonial Singapore, and eventually a respectable Communist leader in the People's Republic of China.
Tan was one of the prominent ethnic Chinese Malayans to financially support Chinese efforts in the Second Sino-Japanese War which broke out in 1937 and organized many relief funds under his name.

 The Chinese High School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As early as May 1913, Tan Kah Kee, a prominent merchant, proposed the setting up of a secondary school for Chinese boys in Singapore.
In 1934, Lee Kong Chian, whose father-in-law was Tan Kah Kee, became the chairperson of school's board, a post he held until 1957.
On 19 March 1999, the school's clock tower was gazetted as a national monument, to mark the significance of the institution as the first Chinese-medium secondary school to be built in Southeast Asia catering to the Overseas Chinese.

Sir John Meurig Thomas, Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain and Master of Peterhouse at Cambridge University, will be the plenary speaker for the dedication, speaking on the topic of "The Cornucopia of Chemistry." This will be followed by a review of the history of the College given by Professor William Jolly.
The College is deeply indebted to Russ for his dedicated service these past three years, and in particular for enabling the College to maintain high levels of activity in teaching and research during a period of unprecedented fiscal stringency.
