Tana Toraja berasal dari kata To Riajah yang berarti masyarakat yang bertempat tinggal di daerah pegunungan, karena memang kabupaten Tana Toraja letaknya kurang lebih 300 — 600 meter di atas permukaan laut.
Walaupun Tana Toraja hanyalah suatu daerah yang cukup kecil,namun budaya Toraja adalah bahagian kekayaan Indonesia dimana budaya dan ke indahan alam yang sangat menarik sehingga menarik wisatawan baik dari dalam maupun dari luar negri.
Bagi masyarakat Toraja untuk menjamu tamu, suguhan yang pertama adalah sirih pinang yang akan melambangkan bahwa tamu yang datang telah di terima dalam lingkungan keakraban keluarga.

Ba'lele lies on the west bank of the Sadan river just opposite of Rantepao, the center of tourism in Torajaland.
